Sports Information
With three senior starters in tow,
Tarleton State University is poised
to challenge for the 1992 NAIA
Division II f^tioanl Men's Basket-
ball Championship. It's a position
the Texans are familiar with.
The last two years, the Texans
have been one game away from the
national tournament, turned back in
the Districl VIII uU< - game. This
year, the quasi lo be the best will fi 1
the Texans playing games in five
different slates in order to prepare for
the national tournament being held
on their own home floor.
Those three returning starting
seniors-Jim Moreno, Steve Sass-
man, and Mark Smith-are reason
for optimism that Tarleton will be
there for the final game. It's a strength
that head coach Lonn Reisman plans
to draw from all year.
"Senior leadership and experi-
ence," Reisjnan says. "That's the
biggest strength we have on this team.
Those seniors have 'played together
for three years. You can add juniors
Ed Milton and Joe Hicks in there as
well. They've been through two years
of the syst'-m. They all know what
it's like, what's expected and how to
play Texan ball."
But Reisman isn't about to con-
cede that things will be any easier for
the Texans because of experience.
He's too concerned about a number
of factors that he knows the team will
have to overcome,
"We were weak rebounding last
year," Reisman claims, even though
'the team finished first in District
Yin in that area. "We can do better,
and well have to do better to get back

to the level we need to have an out-
standing year. And we were incon-
sistent scoring from the perimeter.
Somebody must take a scoring role
from the outside oi; this team. That's
a major concern."
While Reisman looks for im-
provement in those areas, he also
issues a challenge to his team. Hie
Texans have led District VIII in
defense three straight years and were
third in the nation last year, allowing
just 59.9 points per game.
"I want us to maintain the . same
level of defense even though the
competition we play is a step up,"
Reisman emphasizes.
The competition is more than
just a step up; it's a leap up. Tarleton
opens the season with Concordia
Nebraska, a team it hit made it to the
national playoffs last year. They
play Minnesota-Duluth at Southern
Colorado's tournament, the team that
finished ahead of Tarleton in de-
fense. They play in an NCAA Divi-
sion II tournament hosted by the
defending national champions at
North Alabama. And they get to
play the defending NAIA national
champions at Oklahoma City Uni-
versity.
The challenge for the Texans
will be blending the experienced
players with some talented newcom-
ers and discovering which players
can step in when called on without
hurting the team.
Point guard may be one of the
problem spots earh because of depth.
Edward Milton (5' 10", El Paso High)
started 20 games last year and ma-
tured into an outstanding player. He
averaged 3.6 points and 4.2 assists
per game last year, starting 20 games.
He's a good ball-handler and pene-
trate who Reisman says will get a
lot of minutes this year.
"Ed's a steady player who will
have to have a big year said not just in
assists but in scoring and defense,
too."
But there's a jumble of players
behind Milton who have to
emerge as the "go to" player when
Milton needs relief. Freshman Joel
Moreno (5* 11", El Paso Cathedral)
has poise but is still adjusting to the
college game. Sophomore Tim
' Cazalas (6' 0", Corpus Christ Canol)
has shown promise after playing in
nine games last year. Reisman hints
that Sassman may also work some
point guard as well.
Sassman (6' 1", San Antonio
Clemens), who Reisman says has
had' tremendous workouts, will pri-
marily handle the off-guard posi-
tion. He could become the player
Reisman is looking to for a scoring
boost after averaging 11.9 points a.
game last year and leading the team
with 82 three-point goals. Freshman
Chris Givens (6 5", Dallas Carter),
who Reisman praises for his athletic
ability, wil be backing Sassman up
and should see plenty of action.
Reisman, who is hesitant to
praise any player for fear he'll gel
complacent, practically gushes over
his senior forwards. "Smith (6' 6", El
Paso Eastwood), has had a great
camp and is totally focused on our
goals. I believe he is ready to take his
game to another level. Moreno (6'
6", El Paso Eastwood), is a solid
player who is mentally and physi-
cally involved in the game plan."
Smith averaged 11.5 points, 7.4
rebounds, and 2.2 blocked shots a
game last year. He is acknowledged
as the best defensive player in Dis-
trict Vm and Reisman believes he is
the finest in the nation. Moreno
averaged eight points a game and
unofficially led the team in setting
devastating picks.
Backing up Smith will be fresh-
man Charlie Turner (6'5", Dallas
Lincoln), a fine shooter, and sopho-
more Kevin Heineman (6'3", Hous-
ton Westfield), a player who is be-
coming an intense defensive player.
Heineman saw action in four games
last year. Both players will fight for
minutes behind Smith, an ironman
who averaged 36 minutes a game
last year and played 54 minutes in a
three overtime affair against East
Texas State.
Moreno will give ground to
sophomores E trick Presley (6'5",
Houston Forest Brook) and Donald
McGee (6'4", Victoria Stroman).
Both players have the ability to play
more than one position and both will
be counted on for scoring and re-
bounding. Presley, who averaged
4.6 points a game last year and started
five games when Moreno was in-
jured, has been slowed in workouts
with a patella tendon injury.
The important post position will
b<. manned by senior Lovell Doyle
(6'9", Maywood, Illinois), who last
started for NCAA Division I St.
Bonaventure and sat out all of last
year. The post player for Tarleton
has been the leading scorer and re-
bounder, as well as a first team all-
District pick, each of the last three
years. _ Doyle appears to be in the
t" M \
first round with a blazing 2.1
second catch, and the finals with
a 2,7 second catch: . She then
split third in the first round of
goat tying and won the finals and
the average for a total amount of
$1,500 in prize money.
TSU rodeo coach Randy
Magers said he was extremely
proud of Hampton who helped
pull the women's team back into
regional standings with a fourth
place.
"J.J. won the most money
any girl has won since I've been
here as coach," Magers said.
Also placing in goat
tying was Kristy Schmidt who
split third in the first round,
second in the finals and second in
the average.
Schelli Walls rounded
up another 10 points for the
Tarleton team by placing fourth
in the first round of barrel racing.
Several men from
Tarleton won- money at the
rodeo, however they weren't
designated as team members to
receive points for the, school.
Jeff King was the only
team member to place. He
placed second in the first round of
bareback riding with a score of
64. However, he bucked off and
injured his riding hand in the
finals. King earned enough
points to remain in first place
standings in (lie region,
Frank Davis won the
average of steer wrestling placing
fourth in the first round and third
in the finals. J.P. Clayton
placed second in the average after
splitting first in the finals with
team member Chantz Freene who
placed fourth in the average.
In calf roping, Jamie
Moore place third in the average
after splitting second in the first
round and third in the finals.
Currently the men's
team is winning the icgion with
several individuals also in top
positions. Magers is very
confident his team will stay in
these positions through the
spring semester.

McFadden, and Roderick Brown.
Although Reisman worries about the
effect of the one year layoff for Doyle,
he also believes the big man will
make Tarleton a national contender.
Joe Hicks (6*6", El Paso Bowie),
who Reisman says has had a tremen-
dous fall, will spell Doyle, and fast-
improving freshman Allied Seymour
(6'7", Houston Forest Brook) could

who may also play some power tic r-
ward, averaged two points and two
rebounds a game last year.
At Tarleton, the quest for the
national championship has begun.
Experience, leadership, and defen-
sive intensity are what will get the
Texans there. They'll start the sea-
sop at Wisdom Gymnasium on
November 11. They hope to end it at
the same location on March 17.
