TexAnns take District Yin by storm

The Tex Ann volleyball
team won the District VIII
championship game last
Saturday against Lubbock
Christian.
In the first game the
Lady Chaps took an early 3-0
lead, but it was not enough to
stop the TexAnns who won the
game 15-11.
Then in the sccond
game the Lady Chaps won a hard
fought game against the
TexAnns winning 15-9.
However, the Lady Chaps had the
TexAnns down 14-6 and it took
the Chaps three championship
points before winning 15-11.
In the third game the
TexAnns turned back on the heat
to win 15-7 and in the fourth
game the TexAnns could taste
that District VIII trophy and
mashed Lubbock Christian 15-4.
Leading the way for the
TexAnns was four strong hitters.
Beth Markin, Belinda Hardee,
Angela Spradley and Kim
Franklin.
The two TexAnns
responsible for the four hitters
high kill percentage were senior,
Gina Markin and sophomore
Sherri Schools. "These two
young ladies set the ball well
against Lubbock," said Coach
Blackwell.
The victory over the
Lady Chaps gives the TexAnns
their first District VIII title in the
15 years of the program.
"I am so proud we won,
its my senior year and I wanted
to end it on top," said Gina
Markin.
The TexAnns are
looking forward to this Saturday
were they meet Southwestern
Georgetown. If the TexAnno
win they will head for the NAIA
National Tournament held in Ft.
Hays, Kansas. Game time this
Saturday is at 2: 00 p.m. in
Georgetown.

The Tarleton State TexAnns
started off the 1991-92 season with a
bang by defeating Ambassador Col-
lege 92-58. They tried to keep up
their winning ways by defeating the
number one NAIA team in the nation
in Southwestern Oklahoma, but they
fell short by the score of 6545.
In the first game against Am-
bassador, Kristin Curtis led the scor-
ing with 23 points. She was fol-
lowed by Heicna Smith who added
seven rebounds.
In the Southwestern contest
Angie Gentry led the scoring for the
TexAnns with 13 she also had five
rebounds.
After the 1-1 start the TexAnns
chalked up win number two when
they defeated Texas Lutheran han-
dely by the score of 7344. Curtis led
the scoing with 18 and Karla Dick
and Butler each added eight re-
bounds.
Then Tuesday night the Tex-
Anns lost a close game against St.
Edwards 68-65 to even their season
mark at 2-2.
Tina Tibbs led the TexAnn
charge with 14 points.

Texans take Kansas Wesleyan
Tournament with three big wins

This past week the Tarleton State
University Texans kept up their
winning ways. First by defeating
Concordia in last weeks Pack the
Gym Night,' then by taking their
show on tfie road to complete a three
game road trip. The Texans com-
peted in the Kansas Wesleyan Tour-
nament and came through smelling
like a rose.
The stage was set as the Texans

took the opener hands down by the
score of 79-63. Steve Sassman had
the big night scoring with 23 points.
Lovell Doyle also put up good
numbers with nine rebounds.
Opponent number two was no
more of the same as the Texans once
again won handily by the scbre of
70-57 over Bethany Kansas. Sass-
man again was the high scorer with
24 points. Maik Smith attacked the
boards collecting 17 rebounds.
The final and championship
game was a little bit different story as
the Texans edged McPherson Kan-
sas by the close score of 53-52. Joe
Hicks led the offensive charge col-
lecting 16 points and also grabbing
12 boards. Smith also grabbed twelve
boards in the game.
TSU also was able to put to
players on the all-tournament team
as Sassman and Smith were selected.
This weekend the Texans will
be hitting the courts in another big
tournament at the UNA Tip-off
Tournament in Florence Alabama.
Represented in the tournament will
be North Alabama, Ferris State and
Missouri Southern.
