Plenty Of Free Ice
Nobody had to be told to wear plenty of clothes to work during the week of January 1, 1959,
when temperatures in the Refinery went as low as 21 degrees. Although the cold snap posed no
special operating problems, several operators, like A. D. Feazle at CLEU No. 3, did have to chip
ice away from some of the equipment around the units, especially valves.

Many unusual and cye-catching pictures seen in Briefs last year
brought favorable comments from employees. Newspapers and maga-
zines often ran pictures that appeared in Briefs because they showed
imagination or because our alert Refinery photographers were
“johnny-on-the-spot” and obtained outstanding pictures at some event
or happening. On these two pages arc eight of the many pictures that
drew the most comment from employees and others during the year.
Humble Day Beauties
Always a source of attraction are pretty girls. There were ten
of them in last year’s Humble Day beauty contest on May 9.
Although it isn’t likely that one would forget the names of the
beautiful winners, they were, from the left above, Nickey Garrison,
third place; Glynda Jenkins, second; and Judy Clements, first.
All are daughters or related to Humble employees.
The 40th annual Humble Day was held at the Humble Country
Club for the second consecutive year. Approximately 8,775 Bay-
town Humble people and their guests attended the big event. In
addition to the beauty contest mentioned above, a second beauty
contest held at the event featured 33 below-school-age beauties
vicing for “Little Miss Humble Day” (picture on Page 3).

Turbine Case Falls
Usually, unit turnarounds come off pretty smoothly. But there was one exception last year when the
16.000 pound turbine case shown above fell 12 feet at No. 3 Cat unit. The case was being replaced
inthe blower house when gears in the lifting equipment’s gear box stripped Idling the heavy case
drop to the ground. No one was injured.
