existing record of 958 barrels

were the XlU at Hydroformer
No. 1, SO, Plant No. 2, and
Hydroformer No. 2. Although nol
in the Solvents group, the ADU

The Benzene and Paraxylene
units both scored record runs last
week as the result of some fine
teamwork by all the Solvents
units and employees assigned to
them. Like a good football player,
each look advantage of conditions
set up by teammates to go the
distance for the new records.
The first to hit a new produc-
tion high for a 24-hour period
was the PXU. On Thursday of

Big Azalea Bushes
The azaleas which D. O. Mayfield, M & C, and his wife raised at
their home in Highlands are probably among the biggest and prettiest
you can find anywhere. Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield are shown on their front
walk which is lined with six azalea bushes that are about eight-feet tall,
and about 25 feet in circumference. Of course at this time of the year,
the plants are a solid pink with blossoms.
The Mayfields planted their large azalea bushes about 20 years ago,
and have taken considerable pride in caring for them since. The bases
of the bushes are surrounded with hardwood shavings to help keep the
soil moist, and Mayfield has installed an underground sprinkling system
of his own design with which to water the azaleas.
Teamwork By Solvents Sets PXU,
Benzene Unit Up For Record Runs
On Friday of last week, the
Offices of the Esso Standard
Eastern Region and Enjay, as
well as Standard Oil Company
(N. J.) and other Humble af-
filiates in New York City went
on a Centrex telephone system
Monday, April 1.
All extension numbers of em-
ployes in the New York offices
were changed on that day. Tie
line numbers for direct dialing
into New York from other com-
pany locations will not be
changed, however.
The Centrex system, compara-
ble to those already in use at
company offices in Houston,

northern New Jersey activities,
and Baton Rouge, permits both
incoming and outgoing calls to
be placed direct from each
phone without going through
the company switchboard.
Employees who have recur-
ring occasion to call the New
York oflices should obtain new
extension numbers for the of-
fices they call either from their
own switchboards, the operator
at the New York switchboard, or
directly from their contacts. A
limited number of New York
company directories are avail-
able at principle Humble loca-
tions.

Benzene unit started a series of
record-breaking runs that ran up
to a string of three by the time
the weekend was over. The Fri-
day high for 24 hours was 4,460
barrels of benzene, beating the
previous record of 4,387 barrels
set on January 26, 1962. Satur-
day saw the new record tumble
when 4,465 barrels of benzene
were produced. And on Sunday,
this latest record was hauled
down when the unit hit an all-
time high of 4,474 barrels. Rid-
ing on these three record days,
the Benzene unit is well on its
way to a very possible record
month.
Just as the PXU was aided by
other Solvents units, the Benzene
unit also had some help in post-
ing the new highs. Setting it up
for the three days of top produc-
tion were the NRU and Hydro-
former No. 1 which prepared its
feed slock, and the TDU and
BXU, both located at the Ben-
zene unit, which gave it the
balanced operation necessary for
such an achievement.
And in the case of both the
record-breaking units and those
assisting them, it was the team-
work of Process, Technical, and
M & C employees that coordi-
nated their performances to make
the record runs possible.
Because a number of the employees at the Benzene unit arc bowlers, Solvents superintendent G. W. Wilson,
at far right, used that type of scorekeeping to chalk up their three new records. Representing the Benzene
“team” arc, from left, D. J. Joy, E. M. Gardner, D. R. Riggs, J. L. Eskew, E. J. Merkel, M. B. Massey, and
J. L. Hollaway. Riggs is a foreman in Solvents, Merkel and Joy are in Technical, and the others are mem-
bers of the Benzene unit’s operating stall.
