Texans secure playoff berth as fourth seed
By Mudi Abubakar
Staff Writer
Tarleton State University men's
basketball team secured a playoff spot
intheNAIASouthwestregional. The
Texans will now face number one
seeded Midwestern State University
in Wichita Falls on Friday night and
the winner will move on to the next
round.
Even though the Texans suffered
a 139-98 drubbing in the hands of the
University of Central Oklahoma
Broncos in the regular season finale
last Saturday, they were able to squeak
through to the playoffs on 10-13
record.
The playoffs are strictly on knock-
out basis, the winner moves on to the
next round and the loser goes home.
By last week, the Texans were
seeded fifth in the region behind the
University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff
and were two-tenth of a point behind.
Naturally only four teams make the
playoffs in the region.
The University of Arkansas Pine
Bluff lost their liast two regular sea-
son games and were eliminated from
the playoffs.
By virtue of this, Tarleton moved
up to the fourth and final seed behind
Midwestern State University, Pan-
handle State University in Okla-
homa and Houston Baptist Univer-
sity.
The Texans are confident that they
will go far in the playoffs and they
intend on going to the national tour-
nament which is the teams' new goal.
Assistant coach, Jason Hooton said,
"The team will take one game at a
time, and if we play with good efforts
from everybody on Friday, we will
emerge victorious."
A win will mean the Texans are
two games away from consecutive
national tournament appearances.
Although the team played under
tremendous constraints all year long,
the coaching staff is pretty satisfied
with the overall outcome of the sea-
son and also the continued develop-

The Tarleton Texans baseball
team split two games with the St.
Edwards Hilltoppers this weekend.
For six and a half innings of
Saturday's game the Texans
outscored St. Edwards 8-1. Unfortu-
■ nately those innings came at the end
of the game. The Hilltoppers did their
scoring 9-0 in the first three innings.
The Texans came back in Sunday's
game, however, and topped the
Hilltoppers 28-17.
St. Edwards' big iiyiing came in
the top of the third when they scored
five runs.
Shortstop Orlando DeLaFuente,
who appeared angry that the rookie
P.A. announcer was unable to an-
nounce the Hilltoppers lineup cor-
rectly, got the scoring started in the
inning with an RBI double.
I Third baseman Todd Leonard
doubled homepel.aFjuenfp.and Otto
Wayne, then scored from third on a
bad pitch.
Second baseman Brian Betts' solo
home run ended the inning.
The Texans made the score 9-2
when center fielder Ryan Richardson
hit a two-run homer in the bottom of
the third.
In the bottom of the ninth, how-
ever, the Texans attempted to rally.
With the score 10-5, shortstop Steve
Woodcock doubled in right fielder
Marlin Johnson. Second baseman
Rusty Dunavant then hit a two RBI
triple, making the score 10-8. The
Texans were unable to score another
run, however, ending the game with
two men on base.
Tarleton lost because of the early
St. Edwards' lead: They remedied
this situation, in the second game, by
getting the early lead for themselves.
First baseman Jason Motley
scored the first run of the game, reach-
ing home plate, courtesy of a double
from Johnson in the second inning.
Johnson then scored the second run
on a fielder's choice to first.

ment of young players on the team.
In the beginning of this year, the team
lost Chris Givens, a formidable scorer
of fast season to a broken foot. As the
season progressed, other myriads of
nagging injuries continued to plague
the team.
Last week, Eric Rankins suffered
a sprained foot but should heal suffi-
ciently enough to play on Friday.
Barry Knot has a sore lower back and
a sore knee and Jeural Sims has a sore
arm.
"The playoff will give our young
people good experience and expo-
sure and will give them something to
build on for next year," said head
coach Lonn Reisman.
Because of inexperience and at
times lack of cohesive chemistry, they
had a roller-coaster year.
They beat good teams and lost to
mediocre teams, this is attributed to
inconsistency and youth, but overall
we played a great schedule, Hooten
said.
It is only fitting that Barry Knot,
playing his final year at Tarleton gets
to play in the playoffs. He had a
stellar three year collegiate career.
He also had an incredible year
leading the team in scoring with 22
points average and 8 rebounds re-
spectively.
He has been voted NAIA player
of the week twice this year which is
The Hilltoppers temporarily took
the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third,
but the Texans exploded for 11 runs
in the bottom of the third.
With two outs, St. Edwards pitcher
Jeff Fluitt began walking batters left
and right. With the bases loaded on
three walks, catcher James Dunlap
approached the plate. He proceeded
to crush the first pitch over the fence
for a grand slam to make the score 6-
3. Fluitt walked the next two batters
then offered up a slow floater to
Woodcock. Woodcock could not re-
sist and hit a three-run homer to make
it 9-3.
A three-run double by Motley
ended the scoring for the inning. The
Texans scored their 11 runs on just
four hits, to make the score 13-3.
Over the last three innings the
Texans continued to make a college
game look like little league. They
scored ten more runs to make the
final score 28-17.

commensurate to players of immense
skill and talent. The coaching staff
has ran out of superlatives to describe
his great contributions to the pro-
gram.
"He is a warrior and he has been
playing with great pain in his lower
back the past two years and it is
amazing the way he assumed the re- ■
sponsibility as the team leader this
year inspite of the adversity he had to
go through," Hooten said. '

TexAnns miss
the target
against UCO
By Kevin Stahnke
Sports Editor
As the last seconds ticked off the
clock Saturday, Mary Ann Isom
launched a three-point attempt that,
if successful, would win the game for
the Tarleton TexAnns.
The shot did not go in unfortu-
nately and the TexAnns fell 64-62 to
the University of Central Oklahoma.
The loss, which came in the last
game of the season, dropped the
TexAnns to 1 -26 and raised the Lady
Bronchos to 5-19.
Meme Oliver gave her usual
strong effort, scoring 16 points and
pulling down 13 rebounds. Jade
Manganella shared the scoring lead
with 16 points and garnered 11 re-
bounds of her own.
Tarleton led at the halftime 32-29
but as has happened several times
this season, they were unable to hold
the lead in the second half.
With the score tied 54-54, the
Lady Bronchos claimed the lead and
never trailed again. The TexAnns
pulled close several times, eventu-
ally resulting in Isom's last second
attempt.
In addition to Oliver and
Manganella, Sara Wagner had nine
points, Isom had seven, and Jana
Skelton and Eleanor Golding each
had six.
