Preface
The City of Denton, while slightly over one hundred years old, has reached its
present size and degree of mature development at a comparatively early age. The
City has been known as an educational center for many years. In the past decade
it has become the Regional Civil Defense center and is soon to have an elaborate
underground facility of the Office of Civil Defense and Mobilization, there be-
ing only three other such units in the United States. Manufacturing and indus-
trial plants have found Denton a desirable community in which to locate due to
its proximity to a large urban market area and its pleasant environment for
employees' places of residence. To the residents of Denton County, the City has
been a market center, and the seat of the County government, since its original
founding. The succeeding pages of this portion of the Denton Comprehensive Plan
will attempt to enlarge these and other factors into an overall picture of the
community. This examination of the existing City and its environs will assist
in determining the characteristics of the present community, why it reaches its
present status, and will also contribute to a foundation upon which to project
its future potentials.9
