The first permanent settlers in Denton County were principally from the eastern
and northeastern states. Some were first generation immigrants from Europe.
The initial division of the County into farms and ranches started some 120 years
ago in 1840, leading to the creation of Denton County in 1846. These first
pioneer immigrants to the Texas Republic were given six hundred forty acres of
land, for each family, as inducement to brave the hardships and privations of
an unsettled and largely uncivilized frontier. Further encouragements were
offered by a private land company, the Peters Colony, which received ten sec-
tions of land for every one hundred families settled in the area.
The first residents of the region were principally farmers and ranchers. Over
a period of sixteen years some eighteen small communities were established
throughout the area now comprising Denton County. A typical settlement con-
sisted of a store or trading post for supplies, a church which usually sufficed
for all the religious, educational and social activities of the inhabitants of15
