After the war, the period of reconstruction further impeded Denton regional
growth. The 1j70 Federal census showed only 361 persons in the City of Denton.
Denton's location as the geographic center of the County was the basic reason
for its establishment as the County seat. This central location also made it
the logical market place for the farm products raised in the country. The rich
land of the "Black Prairie" in the eastern quarter of the County produced farm
products such as corn, cotton, peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans and fruits while
the 'Grand Prairie" in the western half of the County produced grains and live-
stock. It was quite natural that the City of Denton in the "Cross Timbers" area
between the two geological subdivisions should be the trading center. This was
the primary reason for the City's growth to the size of 4,187 people by 1900.
This represented about one seventh of the County population.
In the first three years after the turn of the century the most significant
and far reaching development since the original founding of the City as the
County seat, took place. Denton was chosen for the location of two new
State colleges. Opening of the State supported schools established Denton18
