Due to the fact that Denton's economy is not a self-sustaining unit, it cannot
be studied as an isolated entity. Growth and development of the Fort Worth-Dallas
metropolitan area will exert ever increasing influence on each community within
its sphere of trade. Denton being only fifteen to twenty miles distance from the
present contiguous urban development of this North Texas metropolis, has its
economy geared inexorably to that of the overall regional unit. Because of this,
data on the entire region from which influence is felt is included in this analy-
sis. This study also includes several of the other counties in the immediate
vicinity of Denton County.
Regional Economic Factors
The five state southwestern region, comprising Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma
and New Mexico, is one of the fastest growing regions of the United States. Between
1900 and 1958 the population of the nation increased 2.28 times, or slightly more
than two and one-quarter, while that of the southwestern states increased 2.58
times, or well over two and one-half. Each of the individual states have shown
yearly increases since 1950 with the exception of Arkansas. Texas has far29
