outstripped the other four states in quantity, with its 1958 population of over
nine million persons representing three times that of 1900.*
Economic conditions of the region have advanced even more significantly than
population. Major industry has recognized this situation, and as a result
numerous consumer goods producers have located in the area since World War II.
This movement has created more jobs and higher family incomes, thereby giving
further impetus to the rate of increase in retail sales and effective buying
index. Table 1 shows the population increases and sales data for the five state
region. It should be particularly noted that the Texas market alone constitutes
over 50% of the effective buying income of the entire region. Population in-
creases for the United States, the west south-central states and Texas have
been forecast to the year 2000. These estimates were developed by the University
of Texas Bureau of Business Research, Bureau of Census, The Texas Research League,
and the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. The method of estimating used by the
University of Texas, Bureau of Business Research is generally considered to be
