The most tangible proof of this fact is that more than twenty percent of the
Denton workers are employed in Tarrant and Dallas Counties. The large aircraft
plants account for the majority of this commuting, however, other industries
and services are represented. It is apparent that Denton's future is tied
closely to that of the metropolitan area, and that any economic reaction in
the larger cities will be proportionately felt in Denton.
Denton is situated in an economic area containing well over two million people.
This area extends out one hundred miles from the axis formed by Fort Worth and
Dallas. Other cities of comparable size within this rapidly growing area are
Arlington, Irving, Grand Prairie, Hurst, Garland, Mesquite, McKinney, Greenville,
Waxahachie, Cleburne and Weatherford. In the near future many other towns that
are now small will expand to the size of those mentioned. The area has exper-
ienced almost unbelievable growth since 1940, and, without exception, every study
made of the area arrives at the conclusion that this trend will continue beyond
the predictable future. Reliable projections for Dallas and Tarrant Counties
show that a population of 3,300,000 is anticipated by 1985 in these two counties34
