Table 10 shows the selected service trade characteristics for the City and County.
Again Denton's preponderance as the County's trade center is evident. Personal
services accounted for over half the receipts in this category for the City.
Automotive and repair services comprised 14.4 percent of the receipts, and all
other types of selected services trades accounted for the remaining third.
Retail trade characteristics for Denton and Denton County are shown on Table 11
and Table 12. Within the City very little change in the total number of retail
establishments took place between 1948 and 1954; however, increases were made in
the number of general merchandise, apparel, service station, lumber, building
material, hardware and farm equipment, and miscellaneous retail outlets. Food
stores, gasoline stations, and eating and drinking establishments accounted for
nearly half of all retail business. Retail sales showed a steady increase of over
