have shown the greatest increase since 1944 by nearly doubling in production. Field
crops such as grains and cotton also had impressive value growth. Farm land use
had but little change in percentages between 1944 and 1954. Harvested cropland
accounted for 40.6 of the total farm acreage to lead all other uses.
4. Industry
The value of industry to Denton's economy has grown from a negligible amount in 1939
to a plac e of major importance today. This growth has been due to Denton's location
and to aggressive action on the part of local interests. to attract manufacturing
plants. A fairly well diversified industrial base has been established and the fut-
ure holds much promise. Manufacturing growth is shown in Table J!2. The number of
establishments grew from 16 in 1939 to 24 in 1954, for the City. The number of
employees jumped from 133 to 1,162 in this same period, while the wages paid these
workers in 1954 was over three and one quarter million dollars. The value added
to the product by these manufacturers is perhaps the most important figure. This
dollar amount represents the actual increase in value of the product or raw mater-
ial after handling by the particular manufacturer involved. The value added by.60
