fluctuations since 1900. Dollar input to the City by these schools has been reli-
able and continually increasing, irrespective of nationwide business instability.
With the recent addition of the Denton State School, the- State now has three large
institutions in the City. The two colleges have a total of nearly twelve hundred
full time employees, and the new school will have between one and two hundred
employees by January 1961. The total impact of the schools cannot be measured
in terms of payroll alone, however, since these institutions spend a consider-
able amount of funds within the City, and the students add many more dollars to
the economy. The North Texas State College annual operating budget is over seven
and one half million dollars alone. This represents the same asset to Denton as
an extremely large industry would, with the additional cultural and recreational
advantages furnished by the school.
The Federal Government has over 70 employees in Denton, and this figure has been
steadily increasing with the added importance of the regional office of the civil
defense organization. Recent location of a Nike launching station north of town,
and proposed construction of a $2,400,000.00 underground command post for the64
