German classes on endangered courses list
By Kisty Hoffman
editor in chief
German is a dying language at Tarleton,
and it may have reached the end of its rope
if enough students don't enroll in the
beginning class for fall 1999.
"If enough students do not enroll, not
only will it kill that class, but it will discon-
tinue German at Tarleton," said Mallory
Young, head of the Department of English
and Languages. The reason for this, Young
said, is because German is not offered
every year. When students take the begin-
ning German in the fall, they must also
-.Continued ffom page X
take the intermediate course in the spring.
If students miss their chance to take both
courses, they have to wait two years to
take it again.
Consequently, French is not doing so
well either—it barely made it with just
enough students enrolled to keep the pro-
gram alive. The future of German, howev-
er, looks even bleaker than that of French.
Only 10 students are enrolled so far, Young
said, and about 25-30 are needed.
One reason, Young safd, students are not
enrolling in German in the numbers they
have in the past is because Spanish is the
more popular language. Spanish is the
more practical language, and more and
more people are learning to speak it.
However, some people might overlook
the fact that German is an important lan-
guage in the sciences and in literature, she
said. In addition, German and French both
are very important in international busi-
ness.
What students may not realize, Young
added, is that by not enrolling they are lim-
iting their choices in foreign languages.
"If people don't take that choice, they
end up with fewer choices."
University. Their application fee is being waived
because they had no control over the school's
change. These students will all be eligible for
Tarleton financial aid and scholarships. They
will also have access to all Tarleton facilities and
resources.
These students will only be admitted to the
Tarleton State University System Center if they
have successfully completed 45 hours and
passed the TASP. All students are responsible
for their own TASP registration.
The transition team is busy developing hiring
and developing the center to prepare for the fall
semester. They are at work on developing
course scheduling and hiring departmental fac-
ulty. Many of the faculty will consist of those
who are already hired by UTC. The overwhelm-
ing majority of the Killeen participants are excit-
ed and supportive of the changes taking place.
All department will be centered out of
Stephenville. For example, English professors at
Killeen will report to Tarleton University
Department of English and Languages Head
Mallory Young.
All assets remaining at UCT as of Sept. 1 will
become part of the Killeen branch's operating
budget. Special funding is also under considera-
tion by the Texas legislature, which is currently
in session. This special funding awarded will
hopefully be around $5 million dollars.
