It didn't take long for Tarleton
State quarterback Steve Kelly to
live up to his billing as Lone Star
Conference South Division
Preseason Player of the Year as
his season-opening performance
earned him LSC South Offensive
Player of the Week accolades.
Kelly, a 6-3, 220-pound senior
from Burleson, was near perfect
in the first half of Tarleton's 47-13
win over Langston. He completed
his first nine passes and was 14 of
17 for 235 yards and three TBs by
halftime.
A two-time All-LSC South selec-
tion, Kelly finished the game 17
of 25 for 267 yards.
This marks the third LSC Player
of the Week award in three years
for Kelly. He first claimed the
honors in 1999 after passing for
191 yards and three TDs in
Tarleton's 23-7 win over Texas
A&M-Kingsville, and he was rec-
ognized last year after a 353-yard,
3-TD showing against Western
New Mexico,
The Texans kicked off their 2001 season with a
crushing 47-13 victory over Langston
On the opening possession, Langston marched 68
yards to take the early lead with a 16-yard touch-
down pass. The Texans, picked to place second in
the Lone Star Conference South Division Preseason
Poll, did not hesitate to answer. Tarleton responded
with a 5-play, 59-yard drive ending in a 7-yard touch'
down pass from senior quarterback Steve Kelly to
junior wide receiver Damien Jackson. After junior
kicker J.W. Boren's PAT, the Texans never lost their
momentum.
Tarleton dominated the entire first half with an
offensive explosion led by Kelly, who was selected by
the Lone Star Conference as the Preseason Player of
the Year. Last season, Kelly was picked first team All-
LSC for his league-best 2,638 yards and 18 touch-
downs. Kelly is in his third year at the helm of
Tarleton's offense and continues to be the one of the
most promising players for the Texans. Kelly finished
throwing 17 of 25 for 267 yards and three TDs against
Langston.
Kelly was named Lone Star Conference South
Division Offensive Player of the Week. This recogni-
tion marks Kelly's third Player of the Week honor
from the LSC.
Junior quarterback Chase Sugarek took the reins
during the third quarter, throwing a 32-yard touch-
down pass to Jackson. Sugarek finished out the
game for the Texans with 62 yards on four comple-
tions.
"We had a solid performance both in the air and on
the ground in the first half," said Whitten, "The sec-
ond half was a little sloppy. We made some mistakes
we shouldn't have."
The remainder of Tarleton's second-half points
came from a 22-yard Boren field goal. Boren ranked
among the top five nationally in field goals per game
and field goal percentage.
In a pre-season interview, head coach Todd Whitten
said, "We've got the best kicker in the league in J.W.
Boren. He's a very accurate guy and a great field
goal kicker... He had a good spring, we're pleased
with him and think he's going to really help our foot-
ball team."
Alester Givens, a senior runningback from Los
Angeles, scored two of the Texan's touchdowns and
turned in 76 yards on seven carries. Junior wide
receiver Damien Jackson accounted for two more
Tarleton TDs with 66 yards on three attempts. Senior
wide receiver K.J. Kennard finished with three carries
for 63 yards.
Runningbacks D.T. Hopkins and Chavis McCoHister
each turned in impressive performances. Hopkins' ,
led the Texans' rushing with 92 yards on 14 attempts.
McCollister was not far behind with 85 yards on rune
carries, - v
"Alester and D.T. give us two capable guys with
different styles", coach Whitten stated in a preseason
interview, "we think Chavis will bring a big-play"1
dimension that we didn't have last year. < ;
The Texan defense allowed Langston only 234, <■.
yards on 56 plays, compared to 512 total yards on 66' ,
plays from Tarleton. Junior defensive back Craig: .
McCawley returned a Langston fumble 27 yards for a
Texan TD.
Senior linebacker Mike Jackson led the defense
with 7.5 tackles. Sophomore defensive tackle Jiimmy"
Barnett and freshman cornerback Travis Day each"
turned in. a sack. . ' ; '
The Texans look forward to their next game against
Sam Houston State in Huntsville on Saturday. KCUB
98.3 FM will broadcast the game live. ;
In a preseason interview, Whitten indicated that the .
Sam Houston game would be an important iearnmg
opportunity. " '
"We're very excited to play Sam Houston/' Whitten
noted, "They are in a different division than us, so it
will be a challenge."
