From our special section to dueling cartoons
Dear Readers,
Howdy Texans and TexAnns!
A lot has happened since our last publication the
week before spring break. The most important of all
(1 think) is our basketball teams' performances in the
playoffs this season. And make sure to note that ! said
"teams'" to indicate both men's and women's.
v To commemorate their outstanding jobs, The J-
TAC put together probably our most lengthy project
this year; a Special Section in this week's paper dedi-
cated entirely to the men's and women's basketball
teams and they're winning seasons,
The section is printed on bright white paper
with many color pictures inside, including a pull-out
centerfold of both teams. We have brackets, stats, bios,
pictures and much more.
Check it out and make sure you hold onto it. It
could be a collector's item one day!
Another thing I want to mention before wrapping
this up is that (as I hope you've noticed) there are two
editorial cartoons. The J-TAC is always open to guest
opinion items. This means letters to the editor/guest
columns and guest cartoons. So don't be shy.

Student is disappointed with recent SGA actions
Dear Editor,
Today I find myself thoroughly disappointed
in our Student Government Association, As a past -
member of SGA and an active student on campus,"!
keep myself updated in all of SGA's doings through
The J-TAC, friends, the SGA Web site and my room-
mate. Let me catch you up as to why I am so disap-
pointed...
SGA recently made amendments to the constitu-
tion that required those running for President or VP
. to have a running mate. Our fearless student body
president, Casey Hogan, stressed that this was a
great idea because it would make it more convenient
for more people to run. .Really? Is it really more
convenient to seek someone out who would make a
good partner for yourself in one of these positions?
Logically, ifs much easier to simply decide for your-
self if you want to run for a position and not have to
worry about a running mate, right? But Mr, Hogan
and his executive team felt strongly that this amend-
ment would result in many more students running
for these offices.
After being incorrectly handled OUT of Par-
liamentary procedure in a regular SGA meeting,
the amendment went to vote among the student
body, and it passed. I recently got statistics from
The J-TAC, and the fact is that only 172 out of about
7,084 students even voted. That's less than 2.50%
of the total Tarleton student body! I think many
of the people who voted were probably members
of SGA. Others who voted "yes" probably didn't
quite understand all of the changes but just trusted
that our own governing body would be suggesting
something worthwhile. I also believe that the voting
process should have been handled differently. There
were several very different changes being suggested;
wouldn't it have made more sense to vote on each
change individually instead of in one lump? Then
students could have been able to decide on each
change instead of being torn because they agreed
with a few suggestions and completely disagreed
with others. Doesn't that make more sense?
I have only one more problem with this entire
ordeal. You see, one of my very good friends desired
to run for student body president. She, however,
was unable to find a proper running mate. Due
to this, guess who is the sole person running for
student body president now? Oh yes, none other
than Mr, Casey Hogan! So, in the long run, the
amendment that he suggested would allow many
more people to run resulted in him being the sole
applicant. And now it is too late to make new
amendments before we must vote once again! Coin-
cidence? Perhaps. Unfortunate? Absolutely!
Tarleton, I wonder if you understand what this
means. You see, we now have no say in who our fu-
ture student body president will be. Not that that is
a horrible thing. I happen to believe that Mr. Hogan
is a great leader; he takes charge, and he gets things
done, whether it be good or bad for Tarleton. It is
just so unfortunate that our campus now has no say
in such a matter. Even if 7,084 students don't vote
for Mr. Hogan, all it will take is him voting "yes."
So, congratulations, Casey, on winning your second
term.

Alumnus encourages
graduating class to not
rush through time left
To the Graduating Class of May 2006:
It's nearing that day in May you've been, working toward all
your scholastic life, but don't wish it here so quickly. As a member
of Tarleton's last graduating class in December 2005 I was like so
many of you now, I was finally going to graduate and I wouldn't
be broke any longer. You don't realize it now, but there are a lot of
things about TSU and Stephenville you are going to sorely miss.
You're leaving home, not the place where your parents live,
but where you live. It's this place that is yoiir world. Everyone
you know and everyone that knows you is here and you're going
to a place where neither of these things is true.
You're going to miss those big full moons rising late on a
summer evening, the soft smell of the air after a spring rain and
the rainbows that so often follow. You're going to miss the awe-
some sunsets over Pecan Valley and the fantastic night skies when
you're out driving the county roads late at night and.
You're going to miss seeing the spotted cows everywhere,
Dublin Dr, Peppers, and the "My border collie is smarter than
you're lawyer" bumper stickers. You're going to miss going to
class, studying, your favorite professor, and yes, even the tests.
You're going to miss watching the seasons change the trees on
campus and that nook in the library where you can quietly watch
the world go by outside the window.
There's a lot you're going to miss about TSU, so don't rush
May's arrival, it'll get here soon enough.

Iran problem must be solved, peacefully or not
By D'LEESA KEYS
Columnist
British philosopher Edmund Burke once said that
"the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for
good men to do nothing." By now we've probably all
heard about Iran's nuclear program — how they keep
enriching uranium and telling us ifs for "peaceful pur-
poses," At the same time, Iran's president, Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, has called for the destruction of Israel,
denied the holocaust and called for the downfall of Presi-
dent Bush. Can it get any worse, you may ask? It does,
Iranian leadership has refused to let Russia enrich
uranium for then\ and has threatened the United States
with "pain and Suffering" if we impose economic sanc-
tions on them if they don't stop their uranium enrich-
ment. On top of that, Iranian television has aired a
cartoon of a little boy blowing himself and a convoy of
Israeli military personnel up after they supposedly kill
his family Brainwashing at its finest,Tadies and gentle-
men! But wait, there's more.
According to a FOX News
special titled "Iran and the Bomb,"
Ahmadinejad is a strong believer in
the Shiite legend of the 12th Imam, a
messianic prophet who will come out
of a well outside of Tehran and bring
a reign of heaven on earth after the
apocalypse. After seeing this and the
rest of the evidence, any idiot can connect the dots and
see what's really going on! Amedenijad thinks that the
only way that this well-dwelling Imam can come crawl-
ing out is to bring about his "apocalypse" onto Israel
and, quite possibly, the United States with one or more
nuclear weapons made with the uranium that was en-
riched for "peaceful" purposes! '
In order for this evil not to triumph, action has to be
taken. Before you go off and say that Iran is a democracy
and we can't attack them and call me a blood-thirsty war
mongerer, listen up. Iran is NOT a democracy, it is a
theocratic oligarchy. This means that Ahmadinejad is not
the one in charge. Ahmadinejad is a pawn for a bunch of
radical clerics and ayatollahs that are calling the shots.
Military action against Iran may become necessary,
but it must be a last resort. We're tied up now in Iraq
and Afghanistan as it is. The United States and the rest
of the world need to pursue every avenue of diplomacy
with Iran until they are all exhausted. I also don't care
if the Iranians drive up the price of gas if we do resort
to economic sanctions. I would rather pay five dollars a
gallon for gas than see Tel Aviv or New York City nuked
off the face of the earth.
If it does come down to military action, it's possible
that the United States will have more allied forces like
Germany with us than we did in Iraq, It's also even more
likely that the Israeli Air Force will strike and destroy
many of Iran's nuclear sites like it did in Iraq nearly 20
years ago. And unlike the United Nations, I will not
condemn Israel for doing so.
I don't like the idea of sending soldiers into harm's
way in Iran, but if it comes to it, so be it. God bless
America and our fighting men and women abroad and at
home.
