If I had known the ’80s were going to give birth to a youth
cult, I’d have taken better care of my body.
It’s a little scary the way things are going. First. Bert Parks
was let go because the Miss America pageant officials wanted
a ’’younger” image...like John Davidson.
Then Mike Douglas’ contract was not renewed and
someone suggested his audience was growing older with him
and perhaps a younger host was needed...like John Davidson.
I even heard someone say recently (who had just returned
from a Ronald Reagan rally). “The Republicans could use a
younger man...someone like John Davidson.”
The way things are going I predict that by 1985, every
public official, every talk show host, every sports figure,
yea.every man over 50 will be replaced by a John Davidson
clone.
It’s only a matter of time before Big John McDavidson
walks to the microphone of the Tonight show and introduces
his look-alike. "‘Hereeeeee’s John!”
And how about the dean of CBS News saying. “This is John
Davidson...and that’s the way it is.”
Can you imagine John Davidson replacing George Bums
and saying. “At my age. I get excited when my soup is hot.”
and no one laughs?
Can you honestly see Santa Claus as a bearded John
Davidson? Would you have the same feeling for finger-lickin’
food if you saw Col. John Davidson spinning around in a
bucket full of chicken?
I for one cannot imagine a world without the silver-haired
set: the Henry Fondas, the Cary Grants, the Walter
Cronkites, the Leonard Bernsteins, the Joe DiMaggios, the
Robert Penn Warrens, and the Fred Astaires.
Every time an older man or woman dies..part of our past
dies with them. They all own a piece of our lives which can
never again be created. When they are gone, we are at the
mercy of our memories.
When I look back and try to remember the most impressive
human being I ever saw. it has to be a night in Kentucky when
I saw an award being given to Gen. Omar Bradley. He was
confined to a wheelchair, but as the flag was unfurled, with
some difficulty, he pulled his body to sitting attention.
He was the most beautiful 85-year-old John Davidson 1 had
ever seen.

DEAR ANN LANDERS:
Recently I married a divorced
woman. She was married to Mr.
X for 10 years. They had a
daughter who is now nine years
old.
My wife keeps a huge
photograph (12" by 14") of her
former husband on the chest of
drawers in our bedroom. I
hinted several weeks ago that
the picture made me uncomfor-
table. Her reply was. "He is my
daughter's daddy. That picture
has been there for four years,
and if I remove it she might
think I have hostile feelings
toward him."
Our sex life is not as good as it
should be. I have had several
"failures" these past few
weeks. When we made love in
my apartment building before
our marriage, it was terrific.
Our honeymoon was also
fantastic. I'm sure I am
inhibited by those eyes that
seem to be staring at me from
the chest of drawers.
I never thought I would wind
up asking Ann landers for
advice, but here I am. Please
help me.-Love Trouble In
Kansas
DEAR KANSAS: It's nice of
your wife to be alert to what her
daughter might pick up in the
way of non-verbal messages,
but she's off-base in this
instance. Daddy's picture shou-
ld be kept in full view, but the
appropriate place is in her
daughter's bedroom--not yours.

DEAR ANN: You were not
fair when you responded to "It
Happened in Boston." I refer to
the woman who felt sorry for the
bride when her husband shoved
the wedding cake into her face
at the cutting ceremony.
Apparently you are not hip to
this generation's customs. Miss
Landers. Let me fill you in. I
have seen this happen at
practically every wedding I've
attended in the past 10 years.
Each time I cringe, but everyone
else laughs.
"Cake-shoving" seems to be
a great crowd-pleaser. Usually
the bride pushes the cake into
the groom's face. Last week I
attended a very elegant
wedding in Beverly Hills. The
flowers were perfect. the
attendants beautiful and the
buffet table magnificent. When
they cut the cake. I prayed there
would be no rough-housing.
The bride fed her groom the
first piece daintily. I was
relieved. Then it was his turn.
She saw what he was going to
do. so she grabbed his wrist.
They fought like a couple of
ten-year-olds while his male
friends egged him on. scream-
ing. "DO IT." The couple
struggled for what seemed like
an eternity. Finally he won and
shoved the cake into the bride's
face, ruining her make-up and
splattering her gown.
Although I deplore this antic.
I think you should know it's
considered cool by the younger
