HEREFORD REPORTER, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1901
IML rTQHBF HTEIE8T
Happenings in Our Busy County
Seat Briefly Told.
MEMORIAL SERVICES.
At 10 o'clock a. m. on Thursday
all business houses in Hereford were
closed on account of the services in
memory of ex-President McKinley.
The citizens of the town assembled
at the church, and Judge Ferguson,
▼ho was master of ceremonies, an-
nounced the program, which was car-
ried out as follows:
Invocation—Rev. Woods.
Song, America—Choir.
Following this were short talks by
Dr. R. M. Johnson, R. F. Holloway
and Judge Gough, alternating with
singing by the choir.
l After these the sermon was preach-
ed by Rev. C. A. Clark, which was
quite impressive.
The services closed with singing
" Nearer, My God, to Thee," the
favorite hymn of the late lamented
Presiden^.
Music was in charge of Dr. R. H.
Gough and was quité impressive.
The services were concluded by
prayer, led by Rev. Mr. Wood.
Williams ft Son Sell Out.
The latter part of last week ar-
rangements were completed whereby
Stambaugh & Lipscomb acquired
the grain business and property of
Williams & Son. They have con-
solidated the business with their own
large interest here and will doubt-
less do a larger business than ever
before and certainly are better pre-
prepared to serve the public. The
Williams wagon pard, in conjunc-
tion with their own will give them
abundant facilities for carrying on
the yard business that comes to
them. The yards are spacious,
well watered, and dry and they are
at your service. There is no need
of saying aught of Stambaugh &
Lipscomb—both gentlemen are iden-
tified with too many interests in
Hereford and are too well known for
the Reporter to say words of com-
mendation. Their business is bound
to increas and it will be handled in
a satisfactory manner. Both mem-
bers of the old firm will return to
Plainview for the winter. During
the time they have been in business
here, they have made many friends
who will sincerely regret to have
them leave us.
A New Building.
Jowell & Halloway will in the
near future erect a commodious of-
fice structure on the lot between
Dr. Johnsons and Witherspoon &
Gongh's. This office is rendered
imperative by this firms rapidly
increasing business and will be fitted
out and arranged to sust the con-
venienc of their patrons.

Some Facts From Assessor's Rolls
The taxable value of property in
Deaf Smith county for this year is
$1.262.807, an increase of $180.000
over last year.
Taxes are levied on 902.025
acres of land in the county.
There are 29254 head of cattle
and 1581 head of horses in the
county.
The citizens of the county pay
taxes on 187 head of hogs in the
county.
It1 is somewhat strange that the
people do not raise more hogs, as
they have been found to be very
profitable by those who have tried
it; especially where they have free
access to green wheat, alfalfa or
other pasturage.
Burns ft Cardwell.
George E. Burns and E. F. Card-
well are the members of the new
grocery firm of Burns & Cardwell.
They are erecting a commodious
building on the lot just north of Mc-
Glothm ft Black's furniture house,
and just as foon as completed will
occupy it with a large and complete
line of staple and fancy groceries.
Their line will be new, fresh and
complete, and by careful attention
and courteous treatment hope to
merit a portion of your patronage.

looking after his lately acquired
property interests in Deaf Smith
county.
Jesse DeVaney left last Monday
night for Canyon, where he was
transferred from Hereford. Mr. De
Vaney has many warm friends in
Hereford who only hope that it is
but a question of time before he
returns to us.
At the baptismal services last Sun-
day out the lake, northwest of town,
some twenty-one converts were im-
mersed and that evening received
