GOTHIC, EARLY AMERICAN,
CONTEMPORARY, OR MODERN
. . . Americans have a right to be
proud of the beautiful structures
erected and dedicated to the
service of our Lord. David had a
great desire to build a temple for
the Lord, but because of his sins
he was not allowed to complete
it. . . . The building completed by
Solomon was used as God's house
until the people strayed from
God, and then it was destroyed.
God has no desire for the building
without the people.

The Church is God's appointed agency in this world
for spreading the knowledge of His love for man and
of His demand for man to respond to that love by
loving his neighbor. Without this grounding in the
love of God, no government or society or way of life
will long persevere and the freedoms which we hold
so dear will inevitably perish. Therefore, even from
a selfish point of view, one should support the Church
for the sake of the welfare of himself and his family.
Beyond that, however, every person should uphold
and participate in the Church because it tells the truth
about man's life, death and destiny; the truth which
alone will set him free to live as a child of God.

On many occasions, the zealous efforts of the disciples to
protect Jesus from what they considered a discomforting
situation brought from the Master a gentle scolding and a re-
minder that the Son of man had come to minister to all mankind
When the disciples rebuked parents for bringing small
children to visit with Jesus they expected to receive a word of
appreciation Instead Jesus was displeased He scolded the
disciples took the children in his arms and blessed them
Compare this to the attitude and actions of many of today s
adults and parents who require children to be seen and not
heard Sometimes not to be seen Some adults are too busy
or too tired to answer a child s question, to help with a
problem Some parents send children to their room or to a
movie to get them out of the way when adult visitors come to

encouraging message of the
book is that there are practical
steps we can take (and that have
taken effectively by thousands of
people) to reduce tension, to
relieve fatigue, and to help us
cope with our anxieties.
The basic thesis is that our
mental and spiritual attitudes
can affect and alter our bodily
functions. The mind has a
powerful influence over the
body. Various religious teachers
have long held this conviction,
but now medical science thru
experiments in biofeedback has
given additional support to this
theory. There are now hundreds
of patients who will tell you they
have lowered their blood
pressure and achieved other
desirable results' by thinking
relaxing thoughts.
Dr. Benson, in his concluding
chapters, spells out the methods
that he has found most effective
at the Beth Israel Hospital in
Boston. They are forms of

ponse. In truth they are an up

By Everett H. Jones, Retired
Bishop of the Eplscopal Church
The most helpful book I have
read lately is "The Relaxation
Response” by Dr. Herbert
Benson, associate professor of
medicine st the Harvard Medical
School. It is published by Avon,
and is available in an
inexpensive, paperback edition.
The book brings together in
simple, understandable Ian
guage the insights of both
Eastern and Western religions,
as well as those of medical
science, in answer to the
question, "How can I avoid
stress and anxiety, and achieve
greater inner peace and
relaxation?"
The author declares that we
are in the midst of a hidden
epidemic and that is taking a
heavy toll in our physical and
spiritual well being, and in our
very lives: it includes every form
of stress, especially the most
serious one of hypertension
There is not room here to
review the causes of our problem
as outlined by the author, but the

dating of age old wisdom about
the need for quiet meditation as
part of one's daily life.
The four basic components
(which need fuller explanation
than can be given here) are (1) a
quiet environment (2) a mental
device to assist in concentration
(3) a passive attitude to ignore
distracting thoughts, and (4) a
comfortable position.
I do not believe there is any
one formula that must be
followed, but I have had
experience enough in my own
life to believe strongly in what
Dr Benson is advocating

for twins I knew what they have
to contend with, as I was a twin
