Crime Stoppers Selling Computer System
Lavaca County Crime Stoppers has an IBM computer system,
with a monochrome display screen and a keyboard, that is now
up for bids. The equipment can be viewed at Gene's Appliance,
306 East First, Hallettsville.
All bids, addressed to Lavaca County Crime Stoppers, need to
be in by Jan. 25th, should be in a sealed envelope and dropped
off at Gene’s Appliance.
The bids will opened on Jan. 25th, at our meeting in Yoakum.
The highest bid received will be accepted and the bidder noti-
fied on Jan. 26th. Payment must be within 5 days of notifica-
tion, or the next bid will be taken.
Money received from the sale of the computer system will be
used for operating expenses for the Lavaca County Crime Stop-
pers.

Yoakum National Bank and First State Bank each contributed
$10,000 to a building fund for a new Yoakum hospital. Plan-
ning for a new hospital was awaiting results of a feasibility
study.....The Yoakum First Presbyterian Church observed its
100th anniversary.....A sudden and previously unannounced
move to close the Texas A&M Plant Disease Research Station at
Yoakum was quickly, reversed, when the pending action was
revealed to local and area supporters, with a statement that the
station would not close in the "forsceable future.".....Palace Drug
Store in downtown Yoakum was observing its 99th anniversary,
during December.....Public Works Director Calvin Cook was”
named to serve as Acting City Manager following departure of
the resigned Bill Lewis on Dec. 28....The city's building permits
had now climbed to their highest total in 9 years.....Ralph Polzin
was elected 1994 president of the Yoakum Chamber Commerce,
with Allen Dieringer, first vice president; Carolyn Kupka, second
vice president; and John Fling, treasurer.....State-ranked
Bloomington won championship honors in the annual Lady
Bulldog Holiday Basketball Classic....The Bulldogs defeated
LaGrange in a double overtime thriller to win the top crown in
the 30th annual Bulldog Holiday Tournament.....Residential
prize winners in the annual Christmas Lighting Contest of the
Garden Gate Garden Club were Roger Holster family, 1st;
George Ford, 2nd; A. J. Stary, 3rd; and Paula Houston, 4th.
Commercial winners were Kunctka Furniture, 1st; Yoakum
National Bank, 2nd; Doris', 3rd; and Super Cut n Curl, ........
Yoakum received a total of $286,556.05 in revenue from its
city sales tax during 1993, topping 1992 by $4,863....YHS biol-
ogy teacher James Yeager was honored by the Texas Academy
of Mathematics & Science at the University of North Texas for
his influence on Academy student Karl Koenig.....The Heritage
Museum announced it would salute the Czech contribution to
the local culture at the museum's special exhibit in 1994.....An
estimated 400 underprivileged boys and girls were served in the
annual Blue Santa program sponsored by the Yoakum Police
and Fire Departments.....Three -Bulldogs, Lawrence Paulton,
Ronnie Suggs and Freddie Hodges, were named to First Teams
on the District 27-3A All-District football squads.....
As 1993 drew to a close, the community was sadden by the
death of 16-year-old Brian Otto, a gallant battler against muscu-
lar dystrophy and perhaps the No. 1 "fan" of the Yoakum Bull-
dogs.....Mrs. Allen (Pat) Harvey, an LVN and a 22-ycar em-
ployee of Yoakum Community Hospital, was honored as the
hospital's Employee of The Year.....
YISD Family Involvement
Meeting Thursday Night
A Chapter One Family Involvement meeting, to which all
parents of Yoakum School District students arc invited, is
scheduled for 6.30 this evening (Thursday) in the Primary
School Cafeteria.
The meeting topic,. "Sysematic Training For Effective Par-
enting (STEP)," will be discussed.
There will be door prizes and refreshments, along with child
care.

prominence in the classical music field, made his New York City
debut as guest conductor of the New York Philharmonic....

.......The Yoakum School Board adopted an $8.5-million
expenditure budget for the new fiscal year......A voter rights suit
filed against the City of Yoakum in May of 1992 was dropped
by the plaintiffs and the City Council agreed to submit a non-
binding referendum to city voters in May of 1994 on whether to
keep the current election system or change it......The hot, humid
weather of August produced 15 days of 100-dcgrcc weather,
with 30 of the 31 days at 90 or warmer- the hottest month in at
least 12 years.. .Opening week of enrollment in Yoakum public
schools totaled 1,648, including 539 in high school.....
★ SEPTEMBER
For the 3rd time in 5 years the First State Bank fast-pitch soft-
ball teams qualified for the national tournament, held this year
in Sacramento, Calif., but the Bankers bowed out in 2 straight
games.....The annual community-wide benefit for the Yoakum
hospital was held.....Yoakum singer Lindsay Ruppert had her
first album of Christian gospel music released.....The Yoakum
Bulldogs opened the new football season by winning 4 of their
5 pre-district games in September, losing only to Schulen-
burg.....Yoakum Community Hospital expanded its healthcare
services by purchasing the privately-owned Home Health Care
of Yoakum.....The Rotary Club-sponsored monthly Country
Music USA celebrated its 16th anniversary......The Yoakum
School Board approved a tax levy of $1.32 per $100 valua-
tion......
With closing of the city landfill, the city reduced its twicc-a-
week residential garbage pick-up service to once a week until a
solid waste transfer station could be built and placed in
operation, with the city stating that the cutback would last for
only about 3 months.....Ralph Rinn, 82, native Yoakumite and
longtime community, civic and church leader, died.....A dona-
tion of $70,000 to Yoakum Community Hospital, for purchase
of a piece of equipment known as a "C-Arm," was made by
Raymond O. Witte.....Billy Parks, district design engineer for the
Yoakum district of the Texas Dept, of Transportation (TxDOT),
was named the new district engineer for the Amarillo district of
TxDOT......Jill Pruetz, a YHS graduate, was heading a 2-year
National Science Foundation research project in Kenya, Africa
.......Senior Jennifer Hermes was named the 1993 Bulldog
Football Sweetheart; with Dawn Miller chosen Band Sweetheart,
at the annual YHS homecoming.....Health officials were warning
that 3 different varieties of influenza were expected to sweep
through Texas this season.....
* OCTOBER
Our Lady of Guadalupe Court 206 of the Catholic Daughters
of the Americas celebrated 80 years in Yoakum.....Chamber of
Commerce Manager Ron Layton joined representatives from
Victoria, Goliad, Gonzales and Port Lavaca on a trade mission to
Mexico City.....Police Chief Ronnie Leek issued a warning that
unless some 300 overdue books were returned to Welhausen Li-
brary by Nov. 1, the police would assist me library in filing theft
charges on the persons responsible.....City Police Sgt. Lee
Campbell was placed on "desk" duty, pending investigation after
he shot and killed a suspect, Mario Flores, 22, who reportedly
lunged at police officers with 2 butcher knives.....After a 4-1
pre-district season, the Yoakum Bulldogs suffered through a 1-3
record for their 4 district games in October.....For the 9th
straight year, the Yoakum High School Bulldog Band marched
to the highest Division I (Superior) Award in the UIL Regional
marching band contest.....
Retired YHS Principal Melvin Borchert was inducted into the
Sports Hall of Fame at Howard Payne University, where
Borchert, a 1943 HPU grad, had been outstanding in football
and track.....It was announced that Dr. William Moehlman, a
YHS grad and son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Moehlman, was moving
his practice to Yoakum from Fort Worth....The Yoakum Herald-
Times began its 102nd consecutive year of publication.....A
freezing 28 degree temperature was recorded on Oct. 30, the
earliest freeze in the Yoakum area in at least 11 years....Building
permits through the first 10 months totaled $2,439, 219, the
highest since the full year of 1987.....The YHS Class of 1943,
with 35 members present, held its 50th year reunion......
★ NOVEMBER
Two technicians of the Yoakum EMS, Matt Cerny and Jeff
Mraz, were honored for their quick-action in helping to save the
life of a baby that had been bom at home......The Bluebonnet
Youth Ranch, home for boys and girls from homes of abuse and
neglect, observed its 25th anniversary with an open house....City
Manager Bill Lewis announced his resignation, effective Dec.
28, to accept a similar post at Uvalde.....The Lavaca County
Grand Jury absolved Police Sgt. Lee Campbell of any blame in
the shooting death of a suspect who had allegedly threatened
officers with 2 butcher knives.....The football Bulldogs finished
with a disappointing 5-5 season. However, the junior varsity
Bulldogs enjoyed a perfect 10-0 season....For the first time since
1988, the Lady Bulldogs failed to qualify for the state cross
country championship run, but did finish 2nd in district.....Jerry
Lackey, Lavaca County Agriculture Agent since 1974, retired

Death claimed retired Yoakum Fire Chief Elmer Hanna, who
first joined the Yoakum VFD in 1932 and later went on to serve
as chief for 40 consecutive years......Yoakum Knights of Col-
umbus donated $8,000, proceeds from the KC bingo games, to
St. Joseph's School......Fieldon Stevens, owner of Stevens Nur-
series at Sweet Home, offered to donate 10 acres of land near
the intersection of U.S. Highway 77A and FM Road 531, if the
Yoakum and Hallettsville hospitals would merge and build one
new, regional-type hospital. The merger idea was later rejected
by the Hallettsville facility, unless Yoakum was interested in
becoming a part of the Lavaca Medical District......Building
permits for June boomed to over $1.3-million, the biggest one
month in some 6-7 years. Topping the list was a $1.166-million
expansion for Tandy Brands.....The City of Yoakum observed
its 106th birthday with a community cake-culling, street dance,
rodeo events and an ice-cream social.....Seven members of the
Yoakum Track Club qualified for 8 events at the National AAU
Junior Olympics in Knoxville, Tenn.....Yoakum's Little League
Major League All-Stars (11-12-year-olds) came within one
* game of reaching the state championship tournament when they
lost to Austin Western Hills in the finals of the sectional
tournament. The 1993 Stars were the 2nd Yoakum team to ever
reach the sectional finals.....Monica Fields was hired as the new
head basketball coach for the Lady Bulldogs and Julie McMinn
was hired to be head coach of the girls softball program that was
scheduled to become a part of the YHS sports program in the
Spring of 1994.....

Dr. James Key became Yoakum's newest family medicine
physician in 9 years......Yoakum Community Hospital Adminis-
trator Ellwood "Buzz" Currier began a scries to public forums to
explain the needs for a new hospital and possible op-
tions.....Graduation was held for the 41st class of vocational
nurses to graduate from the Yoakum hospital LVN school...City
Council approved 1st reading of an $8.5-million expenditure
budget for the 1993-94 fiscal year and voted to keep the same
25.25380 cents per $100 valuation tax rate.....YHS sophomore
Amy Bucek, a member of the Yoakum Track Club, won the
national title and gold medal in the high jump for Intermediate
girls at the National AAU Junior Olympics. Amy became
Yoakum's 4th national champion at the national finals, following
in the footsteps of Claudia Haywood, Jennifer Myers and
Kalleen Madden.....Jeff Kaiser gave the Yoakum Swim Club its
first ever state champion when he won the 50-yard butterfly for
boys in the 15-16 age division at the state AAU swim meet in El
Paso.....
The Yoakum Hospital District board of directors adopted a
$422,271.44 expenditure budget for the 1993-94 fiscal year
