Mathcounts Missed YJHS Students
The 11th annual Mathcounts competition held Feb. 5 in Vic-
toria was very successful, thanks to the 139 students and to the
23 math coaches who supported them. While the Yoakum area
middle schools did not field a team in 1994, the Texas Society
of Professional Engineers would like to invite all "Mathletes" to
start thinking about next year.
Mathcounts is an extra-curricular coaching and competition
program for 7th and 8th graders that emphasizes problem-
solving. Participating students and their coaches get the oppor-
tunity to receive recognition, and to advance to the state, and
perhaps even the national contest.
Mathletes compete for 4 spots on their school Mathcounts
teams and then will compete in the local competition to be held
in Victoria in February, 1995. Champions will continue on to
state and national competitions. At all levels, students compete as
teams and individually in written and oral matches. Subjects in-
clude probability, statistics, linear algebra, and polynomials.
Students win prizes such as certificates, scholarships, and trips.
We've targeted 7th and 8th graders, since they arc at a crucial
stage in sustaining and developing math skills and interest.
Our Mathcounts competition will be incomplete without the
participation of Yoakum schools next year. Will the Yoakum
community show the same enthusiasm and recognition for aca-
demic achievement as it does for athletic achievement?
Mathcounts is sponsored locally by the Victoria Chapter of
the Victoria Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engi-
neers, with generous support from NationsBank, E.I. DuPont de
Nemours, BP Chemicals, Union Carbide Corp., the ALCOA
Foundation, Formosa Plastics Corp., H.E.B., Lack's Furniture a?
and the American Society of Mechanical Engincers-Coastal _
Bend Subsection.
Thank you in advance for supporting Mathcounts.

Alert police officers ques-

Friday noticed a small plastic
bag inside and, on searching
the 1984 Buick, discovered
120 'rocks' of suspected crack-
cocaine and $1,122 in cash.
M L. Dilworth, 26, of Yoa-

boy were taken into custody
and charged with possession of
a controlled substance with
intent to deliver.
Dilworth was arraigned be-
fore Municipal Court Judge
Dayna Tuttle, who set bond at
$50,000 and ordered the sus-
pect to be incarcerated in the
DeWitt County jail. He will an-
swer the charge in 24th District
Court in Cucro.
The teenager was taken to
the Victoria detention center
by DeWitt County juvenile-
probation officers for further
action.

A Man Who Will Be Missed
When one reflects on the attention and publicity crime and
violence receive in our society, it is very easy to feel that perhaps
we are a lost people. We are bombarded with facts and figures
that our children are not learning, that they can't read, but that
they can be taught to use a condom. This is a reality and so dis-
tressing that we often feel helpless to remedy the situation.
Karl Proschko, a former student of mine and my husband's,
graduate of the University of Texas and clinical pharmacist at
Citizens Medical Center was a perfect example of the fine young
people we know are in our midst, but do not receive the atten-
tion and recognition they deserve.
Karl was thirty-five years old when he died suddenly the day
after Christmas. We were terribly shocked and saddened by his
untimely death. He was voted Employee of the Year in 1991 at
Citizens, and much respected by his peers.
A few days before his death he expressed again to my hus-
band the high regard he had for him as a teacher. Karl fre-
quently initiated the conversation about word affairs and poli-
tics. He had a bright and questioning mind.
When I received a pacemaker at Citizens a few weeks ago, the
nurses said there was a note on my Ivac from Karl. We all
agreed he was absolutely "precious".
Alfred and Leona Proschko, his parents, should feel proud
that their son was outstanding in his humanity. They loved him
and taught him to be the man he became.
For all who knew Karl, his leaving is a great loss, but the inspi-
ration of his life will be a bright reminder that goodness and
caring are the traits of character we must instill in our children.
Then, and only then, will the ascendancy of these truths redeem
us as a society.
