Americans eeem tote infatuated
with heroes.
They might be sports figures,
movie stars, television personali-
ties, or even popular singers.
For children, the idols might be
comic book heroes, or some ani-
mated character in a newly-re-
leased movie.
When it comes to conflict and
wars, political leaders may either
be treated like someone with god-
like powers or condemned as be-
ing demonic - depending on which
side you're on.
During World War II, it was easy
for the Allies to demonize Adolph
Hitler because of the terrible
crimes he committed against hu-
manity. But it was also easy for
him to become a unifying force in
Germany at that time in history
because he responded to their
need to restore their national
pride after the humiliating treaty
that was forced upon them at
Versailles years before.
Even during the Gulf War,
Sadaam Hussein was portrayed
as a villain who invaded a small
helpless country. That perception
was made easier because the gen-
eral public wasn't aware at.the
time that the U.8. government
had previously been backing him
and supplying him with anna. So
it often depends on how someone
is painted - either as good or bad.
There are some heroes who are
only known to a small group of
people because of some one-time
courageous act performed, like
risking their lives for someone
else.
But moot heroes in this age are
considered more like saviours.
They may save the pride of a par-
ticular city or group of people by
winning games for their team
What heroes do test is to unite
people. They bring people together
and allow them to participate in
an event or series of events. These

heroes inspire energy and enthu-
siasm in those influenced by what
they door say.
Unfortunately, these heroes or
idols, as they’re often called, are
mere human beings. If they can
loss thsir ability to win and begin
disappointing their followers and
supporters, they soon are fallen
idols.
These heroes may fail to disci-
pline themselves, turning to drugs
or alcohol for wrongfill pleasures.
Or as in the case of sports and
TV star OJ. Simpson, they may
end up accused of cold-blooded
murder in a bazaar chain of
events that startles the entire
country.
This is an example of what hap-
pens when an idol falls. It's also
proof of how millions upon mil-
lions of Americans can become
caught up in what happens to a
well-known celebrity - the hours-
long police chase, the surrender,
the weeks and weeks of pre-trial
live television coverage, and even-
tually the long murder trial itself.
American heroes today, it seams,
are idolatoibes honored, adorned,
and very often bestowed with
huge sums of money. As idol-wor-
shippers, we often listen to their
words and even buy the products
they endorse.
In some bizarre circumstances,
these heroes turn into more than
just idols. They become gods,
drawing thousands, sometimes
even millions of people, to follow
and maybe even die for them.
We saw it happen right here in
Texaa at Waco with the Branch
Davidians. Between 40 and 60, in-
cluding children, died in the burn-
ing buildings with their leader as
the nation and the world watched
it happening live on television.

picture, people don't want their
