Did you know that President
Theodore Roosevelt once said
"No man is above the law and
no man is below it”? I don't
know how true that is these
days, especially when 'big
bucks' are involved.

AMO
FATHER CHARLES KRAM CELEBRATED HIS 65th BIRTHDAY Friday among a host of friends and well-
wishers at a party in his honor at Yoakum Community Hospital. Born in Shiner in 1929, he graduated St
Ludmilla's Academy in 1946 and, despite being stricken with polio in 1952 while a senior seminary student,
went on to complete his clerical training and was ordained as a priest in 1975. He was appointed chaplain at
the Yoakum hospital in 1977. Father Kram sees every day as another special blessing because, as he said, "I
have outlived my life expectancy more than eight times already." His many friends in the community are hop-
ing he'll surpass that figure by a wide margin.

Hotline To Improve Response
Dear Editor
We are pleased to announce that Children's Protective Services
is implementing a centralized referral system effective Nov. 1,
1994. This system will help assure a more timely and consistent
response to community referrals and will allow more accurate
identification of referral patterns within your county which .
should help improve service delivery.
This centralized system will be administered out of San Anto-
nio and, will utilize a toll free number, 1-800-292-5032. The re-
ferral line is operational 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight.
After these hours, the Hotline in Austin provides coverage for
the Region.
Two Hotline operators, Clystia Skinner and Leticia Hernandez,
will be visiting this area within the next 2 months to further ex-
plain their roles. We believe this change in procedures will allow
us to provide a better response to community concerns involv-
ing abused and neglected children. Please provide this informa-
tion to anyone who need to make a referral.

Enjoys 1910 Highlights
Dear Friends:
Enclosed find my check for Herald subscription that will be
due Oct. 1.1 really enjoy reading it, especially the Herald-Times
Highlights’ 1910 articles.
One recent article was about the Mamie Boone kindergarten
that my older brother, Roy Lay, and I went to on Montgomery
Street. Somewhere I have a class picture, with Miss Mamie, Roy
and I in the picture.
I think of Yoakum things and how I really miss it all. Mail
here is so slow. It takes 4 days for a letter to get here from
Yoakum, first class. But, I enjoy the paper, even late. God bless
all of you.
