SANTA FE
(Continued from Page 1)
Denton attorneys stated that "Wo
are perfectly in accord with the
Santa Fe‘s plan to build a short
line from Sanger to Dallaa We
are petitioning the Commission to
grant the Santa Fe request-but to
Use the route proponed by Denton,
instead of the route suggested by
the Santa Fe.”
Denton representatives, as the
intervenors, today hoped to show
cause why the publie’s interest will
be best served if the new trackage
is built through Denton.
Testimony has not advanced far
enough to determine if other com-
peting Texaa railroads Will offer
no opposition if the new link is to
be constructed through Denton.
Three railroad* Thursday laid they
were not against the Santa Fe‘s
present proposed route, but they
were anxious that it would not
interfere with their own industrial
developments along the line.
Attorneys for the Texas and New
Orleans (Southern Pacific), the St
Louis A Southwestern (Cotton
Bait) and the M-K-T indicated they
would not fight the Santa Fe’s pro-
posed route, if the latter railroad
would be willing to limit its opera-
tions along its new line. Santa Fe
officials refused to promise to limit
the line's development
Denton representatives discov-
ered a surprise ally ia a group of
Collin County residents, chiefly
from Plano and the surrounding
area. Introductory testimony by
attorneys for the Collin County
delegation indicated that the group
planned to wage a strong battle in
support of the Denton route.
The petition filed by the Collin
County intervenors and signed by
411 persons pointed out that busi-
nessmen and property owners do
not want the Santa Fe to come
through that area. The petition
also stated that the City of Plano
already is served by two lines at
the present time—the Cotton Belt
and the TANO. There is no neces-
way, ex part of the Santa Fe Sys-
tem, said the Denton route would
cost 3840,457 more than the one
they advocate.
In Thursday's written and oral
testimony, Santa Fe officials and
attorneys had been referring to the
Denton route as the "Morrison
line”. However, st the request of
the Denton attorneys, the word
“Denton" wee substituted for
"Morrison."
"It might be s bit misleading to
some folks here to refer to the
Denton route as the 'Morrison'
route,” Phinney explained.
