day deer hunt yesterday, stuffed -
himself with fresh vepison, then
got in bed for an afternoon snooze. I
Garner wouldn’t say whether he
shot the deer himself. For 35 years
he and Uvalde auto dealer Ross
Brumfield have made the birthday
hunt at a secret spot in southwest
Texas hill country near here.
But Garner said to Uvalde news-
paperman J. A. Scarborough: I’ve
had the best dinner today that I've
ever eaten.”
Garner waved a hand toward a
quarter of venison still on a table
and insisted Scarborough take some ,
with him.
Then, indicating he was ready'
for his daily siesta, he said, “I'm
going to bed when you leave.” 1

WASHINGTON LH — House tax
fraud investigators, tacitly admit-

district tax collection offices. .
The House Ways and Means sub-
committee, in a third of a series
of reports yesterday, said the re-
cent reorganization of the internal
Revenue Service was “a major
accomplishment.”

Now that cool weather has ar-
rived, cold weather will not be far
behind. And as cold weather be-
gins, so do the worries of car own-
era. To avoid trouble, car owners
should follow a few common sense
rules to avoid excessive wear and
tear on their automobiles during
the winter months.
A check of service stations in
this area revealed some sugges-
tions for winter care in the mod
erate winters of Texas.
Suggestions include checking the
water hose and radiator for leaks
before putting in anti freeze. Be
sure that the radiator is free of
corrosion and rust so the anti-
freeze will circulate properly. The
best way to clean the radiator is to
have a aervice station flush it. In
reverse flushing, water is forced
backwards through the block and
radiator by air pressure, thereby
cutting out rust and corrosion.
Since more drag is produced on
the starter with heavy oil, a lighter
weight should be used during the
winter months. For a moderate
winter dimate such as in this area
of the country, 20-weight oil should
be satisfactory. If driving is to
be done in severe winter tempera-
tures, an even lighter weight should
be used—such as 5 or 10 weight.
Drivers should always be sure
of having a battery in good condi-
tion at the start of the winter and
try to keep it in the same condi-
tion as far as possible through the
HICKORY CREEK BRIDGE—These two views of the
Highway 77 bridge over the Hickory Creek arm of Garza-
Little Elm Reservoir give an indication of the magni-
tude of the project. The top picture is a shot of the en-
tire project from the west side of the half-million dollar
sieel and concrete structure. In the lower photo, the
height of the bridge can be better judged by comparing
the structure with the car in the foreground. Water is
expected to be 20 to 25 feet deep at this point when the
reservoir is filled. (Record-Chronicle Staff Photos)
cold period. During the winter,
the battery is called upon do a
much bigger job than in the sum-
mer. Lights are run longer be-
cause of the shorter days, the heat-
er and defroster must be used, and
it must turn over a cold motor.
The chassis and body should
come in for special protection to
prevent rust and corrosion. Prin-
cipal cause of damage to these
parts is wetness. Extra greasing

WASHINGTON W — The Atomic
Age has given government geolo-
gists a more accurate way to look
back into the prehistoric age.
The geological survey, an agency
of the Interior Department, says
it has an "Atomic Clock” that
l i
I
tells the age of old rock, fossilized
plants or man made objects by
measuring the traces of radio ac-
tive carbon left in them.
The survey hails this method
as “one of the most fascinating
achievements of the Atomic Age”
and says it has opened “an entire-
ly new approach to the study of
the earth’s past.”
The technique first was worked
out several years ago by Prof.
W. M. Libby of the University of
Chicago. The survey says it has
been improved by Dr. Hans Suess, ;
an American-born physical chemist
on its staff.
This new method, the survey :
says, has made age determina- :
tions up to 20,000 years "fairly i
common place.” Furthermore, it ’
said it holds promise of dating
relics that go back 30,000 years.
The "Atomic Clock” already has
discovered that the great glaciers
last moved across North America
and Europe 11,000 years ago, in-
stead of 20,000 to 25,000 years back
as previously believed.
It has been found that radio-
active carbon is manufactured
constantly by cosmic ray bom-
bardment of nitrogen in the at
mosphere. It then is absorbed by I
living things as carbon dioxide.
While an organism lives, it
keps a balance between radio- j
active and ordinary carbon. New
radiocarbon is added as fast as
the old vanishes.
But when life ends, no more
radiocarbon is added and, as the
geological survey puts it: “The
carbon clock runs down.”

needed on several areas. Wind-
shield wipers should be inspected
and replaced if they are dry and
stiff. Be sure rear tires have suf-
ficient tread to grip the road.
Before very cold weather, check
the ventilating ducts from the grille
to the body to seee that they can
be closed completely. Gasoline
filters should be inspected period
ically to keep them from getting
clogged with water, which will
freeze.
Almost all modern cars have less
than half their weight on the rear
wheels when empty. A good idea
is to carry additional weight in
the trunk so that extra traction may
be obtained
erously several times during the
winter. Nooks and corners should
receive special attention. A Uq
quid wax is best for this.
