WASHINGTON ( — A proposed
increase in individual income tax
exemptions, the hub of a show-
down tax fight in the House this
week—would affect each of the
nation’s 55 million taxpayers.
Just how much it would mean
to them depends upon their in-
come and the size of their families.
Taxpayers are allowed to deduct
a figure for each of their exemp-
tions—in addition to all their other
deductions—b e f o r e income tax
tates are applied to the remaining
income.
The present exemption for each
taxpayer and for each of his de-
pendents is $600. Thus a married
couple with three children would
get five exemptions and an auto-
matic deduction of $3,000 from
their income before it could be
subjected to taxes.

. MARILYN WOWS MOVIE CROWD—Marilyn Monroe
made her first public appearance in Hollywood last week
since her marriage to Joe DiMaggio and her trip to Ja-
pan and Korea and promptly stole the show. She showed
up with a new platinum blonde hairdo and wearing a
low-cut white satin sheath gown. Occasion was a mag-
zine’s annual awards dinner at which she and Alan Ladd,
with whom she’s pictured, were named Hollywood’s

electorate voted and "endersed the
candidates and th' program of the
Communist party”—will probably
be announced tomorrow.
Democrats are fighting in the
House to increase the exemption
to $700, and in the Senate they
have proposed to make it $800 this
year and $1,000 next. But most
lawmakers think the crucial fight
will be for the $700 exemption.
Here is how the $100 increase in
exemptions would affect different
groups of taxpayers:
A married couple with three de-
pendent children, for example,
would pay no tax at all with in-
come at $3,800 or below. (This
takes account of deauctions for
contributions, etc.) The same fam-
ily now pays $84 at $3,800, $48 at
$3,000 and $12 at $3,400.
This family would save an even ’
$100 a year if its income was be- I
tween $4,000 and $6,000. The pre- .
sent tax would be $120 at $4,000
and $480 at $6,000.
Because of higher tax rates in
higher income brackets, the ex-
emption increase would mean a
dollar saving of $104 at $8,000 in-
come, $110 at 410,000, 130 at $15,-
000 and $150 at $20,000. But at the
$20,000 level, for example, the tax
bill would be reduced only from
$3,620 to $3,470. The percentage cut
would be only 4 per cent at $20,-
000, while it would be 83 per cent
at $4,000 and 100 per cent at $3,800
or below.

$40 at income below $5,000. and
would climb to $44 at $8,000 income
$52 at $10,000, $60 at $13,000 and
$68 at $20,000.
For a single person, the saving -
would bo $20 at income below
$2,000, $22 from $2,000 to $4,000.
$26 at $S,000, $30 at $0,000, $M at
$10,000, $47 at $13,000 and $» at
$20,000.
The percentage tax cut drops be-
low 1 per cent at $20,000 for a
single person, $20,000 for a mar- ’
tied couple, $75,000 for a couple
with two children and about $85,-
000 for a married couple with
three dependents.

Sixteen of the 19 Latin-American
nations at the conference support-
ed the United States in warning
international communism to stay
clear of the Western Hemisphere.
Now they want to talk about their
economic problems- and they
want the United States to listen
carefully. •
U. S. Secretary of State Dulles
and the rest of his delegation as-
sured Latin American last week
that the United States wants to
cooperate on economic plans that
are mutually advantageous. How-
ever, the Latin Americans are not
likely to be satisfed with anything
less than definite commiiments
that will eventually lead k a solu-
tion of their economic problems.
They feel that the United States,
as the major market for their raw
materials and natural products,
must agrer to solutions for basic
economic problems if any headway
is to be made in the battle to better
living standards.

'Similar proportions would apply
in smaller family groups, although
the dollar saving would not be aa
great. Generally, wherever the
taxpayer falls into the minimum
tax rates, his saving would be $30
per hesd for himself and each
member of his family.
A couple with two dependent
children thus would save. $80 at
income of $5,000 or below, and
would be relieved $2,900 or below.
The saving would go up to $88 at
an income of between $5,000 and
$10,000, then climb to $120 at $15,-

For a married couple with no
