Hog Crop As a Money Crop.
In discussing diversification and
farming in general, farmers often
refer to some particular crop as a
"money crop." This means, of
course, that they can rely with more
certainty upon the income from that
crop than upon that from some other.
This is because of the fact that the
product referred to seldom fails to
make a satisfactory yield, and of the
further fact that it is always in de-
mand at some price, whether large
or small, Such, for instance, is the
cotton crop. The man who owns a
few bales of cotton knows that when
he hauls it to market he is sure to
find a buyer for it, whether the price
is what it should be or not. The
same may be said of wheat, oats and
a few others of the staple products.
Since the advent of packeries into
Texas there are other things for
which the demand is just as steady
and the market just as reliable as it
is for cotton, wheat, oats, or any
product of the field. Among these
are hops Tv; farmer who has hogs
to sell is now just as certain of a
market for tnem as the farmer who
has cotton to sell, and it seems at
present that the price he receives is
just as likely to be satisfactory as
the price he receives for cotton.-

College Defeated.
On last Saturday afternoon the
Canyon city baseball club defeated
the Panhandle Christian College
club by a score of 8 to 3. The game
was played on the college diamond.
The college team, because of the
lack of sufficient practice, was out-
matched and a few costly errors on
their part added to the score of the
Canyon boys. The college boys are
practicing strenuously now and think
they will be able to meet any team
in the Panhandle with better results
for them.

A Dead One.
Breathes there a man with soul so
dead, who never to himself has said:
««My trade of late is getting bad ; I'll
try another ten-inch add." If such
there be, go mark him well; for him
no bank account shall swell, no an-
gels watch the golden stair to wel-
come the millionaire. The man who
never asks for trade by local line or
ad displayed cares more for rest
than worldly gain, and patronage
but gives him pain. Tread lightly,
friends, let no rude sound disturb
his sc'itude profound; here let him
live in calm repose, unsought except
by men he owes, and when he dies,
go plant him deep, that naught may
break his dreamless sleep, where no
rude clamor may dispel the quiet
that he loved so well. And that the
world may know its loss, place on
his grave a wreath of moss, and on
the stone above: "Here lies a
chump who wouldn't advertise."—

Thaw Case Nearing End.
The Thaw case that is being tried
in New York and has created so
much interest all over the world is
now nearing the end. In a great
many ways this is the most wonder-
ful case that has ever been tried in
America. Harry Thaw has been on
trial for his life for a period extend-
ing over two month for killing
Stamford White last year. Thaw's
attorney, Delmas, has made a des-
perate effort to save his client's life.
His argument has gone to the jury,
Jerome has answered it and the case
now in the hands of judge and jury.
The College base ball team leaves
this (Friday) afternoon for Canyon
City. They are not satisfied with
the results of last Saturday, and
after a hard week's practice and re-
enforcement, will try their luck with
them again tomorrow.

"BRIMMING FULL"
Is the term which describes conditions at our lumber yard. We anticipated, several months ago, a large demand for
building material and hence placed large orders for everything in lumber, doors, sash, paints, varnishes, etc. We are
selling all these at low prices as compared with those at other western points, and will be glad to figure with
'■ those contemplating building. ■
