THE PIANO CONTEST CLOSES
Heavy Voting During the Last
Days of Contest—Closed

GOmmERCIBL CLUB THE WINNER
Miss Sisk a Close Second—Both
Sides in Doubt Until Last
Count Was Made
As the end of the contest appro-
ached, the contest waxed warm.
The friends of the two leading can-
didates worked hard up to the last
moment and both sides made a re-
cord for the large number of votes
cast. The friends of the Commer-
cial Club and Band "got busy,"
the latter part of the week and did
some most effective and telling work.
The friends of Miss Sisk were not
idle by any means ; they rallied to
her support royally ; even her many
Kentucky friends took a hand in the
contest and sent in hundreds of votes.
Tho she lost, yet she feels grateful
to her hundreds of friends who cast
their votes for her.
The judges were Judge C. G.
Witherspoon, Judge W. H. Russell
and Cashier O. H. Vardeman. With
the assistance of two or three clerk's
these gentleman began Tuesday af-
ternoon at 3 :30 to count the votes.
It was decided to count only the
votes of the two leading contestants,
as thev were so far ahead of all the
others. At about 10 o'clock after
several hours of work on the part of
the judges and clerks, the result was
announced. The friends of both
sides became anxious as the count
was being made and many friends
phoned and inquired as to how the
contest was going. Nothing could
be given out until the last figure was
made. The judges then gave out
the result as follows :
Commercial Club and Band 128,189
Miss Jessie Sisk 110,67S
Scattering votes, estimated 75,000
The contest was conducted by the
merchants as an advertising propo-
sition, offering a handsome Monarch
piano. While the Club and Band
won by a majority that appears
large, yet they had in Miss Sisk an
opponent worthy of their steel.
Miss Jessie Sisk is the beautiful
and accomplished young daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Sisk, who
came to Hereford from the good old
state of Kentucky a little more than
a year ago. Miss Jessie is a bright
and splendid pupil in the ninth grade
of the Hereford high school and
stands high in her classes. Al-
ways wearing a winsome smile,
she greets her friends ; and even in
the moment of defeat, it did not de-
sert her. Beginning with only 35
votes and standing the 15th in th-
contest, she gradually gained until
■she stood at the top of the list, where
she remained until next to the last
week. She took the defeat as only
one of courage coul i do, feeling that
she had not failed in her duty and
her work in the least. The Brand
;ongratulates h«r for the manner in
whirh she worked in the ron test.

Hereford in the Mirase
Sidewalk Construction.
The building of good sidewalks
continue. The owners of business
property along Dewey Avenue are
falling in one by one and are having
the most substantial cement side-
walks put in. There has not been a
cessation of the work since the first
section was put in Some months ago.
Fine walks have just been completed
i in front of the Gass property on the
corner of Dewey Avenue, another on
'the property next to the Bogard
building, and two sections are just
¡ being finished in front of Myrick's
! and Johnson's. The walks in froct
¡of Cardwell's and Rayzor's new
buildings finishes them off in
I the proper style. With a few more
sections, Dewey Avenue will have
¡ sidewalks on both sides, making
' quite a striking contrast to the ccn-
i lition of the sidewalks one year ago.
Then, when visitors would come,
I they would invariably remark about
¡ the c!ap-trap walks that maintained ;
j now, you will hear nothing but words
of highest praise for the enterprise
of the city and its citizens. So let
! the good work continue.
Then when Dewey Avenue is
cleared of all rubbish remaining
from material for buildings and side-
walks and the Santa Fe puts in the
proper crossing and grade, that
street will be one of the best and
prettiest streets in all the Panhandle.
Cold weather is coming. You will
need hot fires. You had better let
us repair your old flue before it is
too late. You may wish you had.
