Speaker Monday
After a short business session
conducted by the president, Mrs.
Frank Griffith, roll call was an-
swered with "What President of
the United States You Like Best
and Why.”
Mrs. F. P. Cogburn was pro-
gram leader for the afternoon and
began the first of a series of pro-
grams on period furniture with a
discussion of Thomas Sheraton.
In giving a sketch of his life, Mrs.
Cogburn stated that "he was by
nature a draftsman and mathe-
matician and united these two
qualities in his exhaustive details
of furniture-making."
His style was not exclusively
his own, Mrs. Cogburn told her
listeners, for if history of furni-
ture shows anything, it proves
that the furniture of any given
period reflects the thought of the
nation.
Sheraton displayed great skill
in the use of satinwood, rose-
wood, tulip wood and sycamore
though mahogany was his favor-
ite. Many pictures illustrating
Sheraton’s period furniture were
shown. These included pictures
of chairs, beds, desks and bureaus.
