The late democratic triumph,
from which weave to secure tariff
reform, and an adjustment of the
status of silver, must not be jeop-
arded by family quarrels. If we
desire the democratic party to
continue to shape national policies
we must weld its elements into a
firm union. Some of the states
recently voting with us cannot be
relied on for invariable support,
and the loss of Texas might again
give the contiol of the govern-
ment to the republicans. We are
aware that the loss of Texas is
regarded by many as not even a
contingency, but experience shows
that in these domestic troubles
one faction or the other will finally
seek outside alliances to bolster
up its cause. Our case will ex-
hibit no exception to this rule.
However, as we indicated before,
this branch of the question will be
attended by few complexities.
The chief difficulty will be found
in allaying the bitter personal
hostilities which have unhappily
grown out of this division. And
right here we think the country
press can exercise a very high
function in urging the duty of
mutual toleration? There is a

Kate Field’s Washington, of the

Washington’s inauguration. She
says in consequence of the fearful
blizzard.on the day of Mr. Cleve-

diggers are busy.' Many women
who came to Washington in smiles
are now bathed in tears, mourn-

though there might be an end to
an unnecessary outrage.” She
also says: “Not one woman in or
out of office but assures me she
will vigorously second Mrs.

about this reform. The wife of

the determination of her race, and
