PHILADELPHIA (—A machine
which functioned as both heart and
lungs of a human being for the
first time in medical history was
unveiled yesterday by surgeons at
Jefferson Medical College Hospital.
Invented by Dr. John H. Gibbon,
Jr., director of surgical research
at the college, the machine was
shown to newsmen yesterday with
the announcement that it had per-
formed the combined functions of
both organs while surgeons closed
an abnormal opening in the wall
of a patient’s heart.
The operation was performed
Wednesday on Miss Cecelia Bavo-
lek, of Swoyersville, Pa., 18-year-
old student at Wilkes College in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
For years the girl had suffered
from the malformed heart, a large
opening between the auricles caus-
ing the trouble. Dr. Gibbon said
the opening “about the size of a
half dollar” meant that a large
portion of her blood was continu-
ously being recirculated through
her lungs, causing a condition
known as circular spetal defect
which deprives the muscles and
bones of the body of their normal
nourishment.
The patient’s heart was opened
and the abnormal opening closed.
The surgeons placed tubes in the
two big veins leading to the heart
and another in the artery in the
chest. The tubes in the veins were
connected to pumps which drew
the blood out and circulated it
through the artificial lung. The
blood was then pumped back into
the body through the arterial tube,

Htr^t how to prove Pontiac value:
Fint, get behind the wheel and drive It—see how Pontiac
puts you out in front in traffic, skims you along the open
road with surprising economy; how its big, husky high-com-
preMion engine provides power to spare.
Next, take a good long look at its distinctive styling and
Its luxurious color-matched interiors.
Consider, also, Pontiac’s reputation for unsurpassed
dependability, long-range economy and high resale value.
Finally, compare its low price—so low, in fact, that if
you can afford any new car you can afford a Pontiac. Why
not come in and see for yourself?

in this way “short circuiting” the
patient’s heart and lungs.
Throughout the 45-minute opera-
tion, the patient’s own heart con-
tinued to beat, even though it was
not pumping blood. Dr. Gibbon ex-
plained the heart muscle was con-
tinuoualy receiving its normal sup-
ply of oxygenated blood from the
machine, as did the rest of the
patient’s tissues.
The surgeon said that Miss Bav-
olek was connected to the machine
for the full 45 minutes, but that
the apparatus did the work of the
heart and lungs for 28 minutes.
“For 28 minutes her life depend-
ed on the machine," he said.
Dr. Gibbon said the machine is
"not a cure all for all heart c -ndi
tions. I want to emphasise that the
machine probably will be used
chiefly on people born with a de-
formed heart, ppssibly blue babies,
children with eqngenital heart de-
fects. It can’t help coronary artery
diseases or hearts crippled by dis-
eases of old age.”
The patient has responded well
to the operation and probably..will
be out of the hospital in about 10
days, Dr. Gibbon added.
