RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE OCEAN
THE INTERNATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC FOUNDATION
1 RICKENBACKER CAUSEWAY, VIRGINIA KEY, MIAMI, FLORIDA 33149
September 30, 1966
Dear Member:
During the past thirteen years, your Foundation has grown
at a phenomenal rate. prom our modest beginnings in 1953, we have now
attained a membership of almost 40,000 throughout the United States and
in 88 foreign countries, and our unique publications, SEA FRONTIERS and
SEA SECRETS, are recognized as the leaders in their field. Through the
solid support of members such as yourself, we have been able to constantly
increase the scope of our activities in support of research and education
in marine science.
The growth of membership in the Houston area has been con-
tinuous and is now approaching the 500 mark. A further increase in the
number of local members would justify our arranging lectures and movies
on various aspects of oceanography in your area. This is a program which
the Foundation has long had under consideration for major centers that
have a marked interest in oceanography and a concentration of Foundation
members.
In the past we have held special lectures and meetings on
game fish research at Miami, Nassau, Galveston, Jamaica and other locations.
This year the 11th Annual Game Fish Conference will be held in New Orleans
on November 18 and 19. Meetings will be at the Fontainebleau Motor Hotel,
4040 Tulane Avenue, New Orleans, La., with a distinguished panel of speakers.
As a member of the Foundation you are cordially invited to attend the Con-
ference. The enclosed registration card gives further details. We would
welcome an opportunity to meet you personally and discuss the possibility
of regular meetings of a local group of I.O.F. membership.
Meanwhile we would like to ask you to suggest four or five
potential leaders or influential people who might form a local committee
to assist in organizing such programs.
We also ask your support in introducing as many new members as
possible so that the success of the local meetings might be assured. Just
send us their names on the enclosed postage paid card.
We are grateful to you for your help in the past and hope that
the Foundation can be of still greater service to you and to ocean science
in the future.
X ery truly,~
. G. alton Smith
