John Wayne stars in "The Cowboys," a Warner Brothers
western involving the rites of passage from schoolboy to
manhood in the first theatrical feature to be presented as a
special "Tuesday Movie of the Week" on the ABC Television
Network Nev. 13 (7 30 10 00p m ).
Especially edited for television's at home family
audience, "The Cowboys" tells the classically human story
of innocent youth in transition to maturity. At the time of the
movie's theatrical release, critic Judith Crist called it "a
completely satisfying entertainment "
In the story, set in the 1470's, Wil Andersen (John Wayne),
an aging rancher, loses all his cowhands to a gold rush just
before he has to drive 1,200 head of cattle across 400 of the
meanest miles in the West Against his judgment, and after
fiercely demanding tests, he agrees to take 11 schoolboys
(ages 9-15), and an adult black philosopher (Roscoe Lee
Browne) on the drive. He refuses a hostile young half breed
(A Martinez) and a lying ex convict called Long Hair (Bruce
Dern)
On the trail the boys grow up fast, and when the half-
breed—following closely behind—rescues one of the
youngsters, he is accepted as a member of the crew. The
boys get drunk and learn how pleasure can lead to pain.
They observe (without joining) the meaningless ways of
rootless men with rootless women. and they see one of their
number trampled while helping a friend
They learn the truths of life that were not in their school
books
When Wil is murdered they learn even more, even uglier
truths Determined to carry out their friend's mission they
grow beyond their years into the adult world of duty where
they must prevent his killers from killing again
"To journalists who constantly witness and report the
rapid, sometimes radical changes in the currents of events,
10 years is a long time," says CBS News Correspondent John
Hart "But, even so, it is possible to get a feel of those times,
and to understand their basic quality "
Hart refers to the Kennedy years, which he will place in
perspective on the CBS News Special "JFK One Thousand
Days—And Ten Years," to be broadcast Sunday, Nov. 11
(5:00-6:00p.m.) on the CBS Television Network
"It generally takes many years," says Hart, "to get to the
sources that historians need to help characterize one ad
ministration But the values and importance of what is
commonly called the 'Camelot years' are analyzed and
criticised in this broadcast by the most important source of
all—Kennedy himself."
Leslie Midgley, executive producer of the CBS News
Special, explains "John F Kennedy's arrival on the
political scene coincided with the development of many
technical advances in television We have a complete and
valuable record of the Kennedy era "
"What is important," says Midgley, "is that we have the
unique opportunity to present President Kennedy—10 years
later—in his own words
"Through his spoken record, we get the thrust of such
major events as the confrontation with Soviet Russia over
missiles in Cuba, the construction of the Berlin Wall, the
fiasco of the Bay of Pigs, the war in Southeast Asia, and the
commitment of America to get a man on the moon "
Hart, reporter for the broadcast, consulted a wide range of
knowledgeable people, including the late Presidents
associates, historians and scholars of the Kennedy era
