Distinguished Alumni Award
during the annual Phoenix
Club banquet at West Texas
State University Saturday.

Also to be honored that
evening is Dr. Zeke Mar-
chant, a faculty member in
the WTSU School of Business
who will retire at the end of
the summer session. Mar-
chant will be presented the
Faculty Excellence Award
during lhe banquet. which
begins at 7 pm. in the WTSU
East Dining Hall.
Registration and visitation
will begin at 6 p.m. Lee
Wilcox, a WTSU graduate
who is communications coor-
dinator with Texas Cattle
Feeders Association, will
serve as master of
ceremonies. Tickets are $8
and reservations should be
made with the WTSU Alumni
Association.
Five $200 scholarships will
be awarded to students to
honor Sarpalius and five will
tie awarded in Marchant's
name.
Also recognized at the ban-
quet will be the WTSU stu-
dent Man and Woman of the
Year Man of the year is Doug
James, junior business major
from Lubbock, son of Manin
James of Hereford, and
Woman of the Year is Patty
Scott, senior marketing ma-
jor from Fritch
The Weldon Trice Ring
Award will be announced and
a new ring award will be
presented to a student to
honor Saundra Meek, dean of
student affairs The Saundra
Meek Ring Award is spon-
sored by the WTSU Recrea-
tion Club The Trice award
honors the former WTSU
dean of men who is principal
at Rex Reeves Elementary
School in Canyon
Miss WTSU, Tammy Don-
nell, a freshman from Ca-
nyon, also will be introduced
Sarpalius is serving his se-
cond term with the Texas
legislature The son of an Air
Force pilot, he was born in
ministration and was hired as
a faculty member to teach
marketing
After a leave of absence to
earn a doctorate in education
and a Chartered Life Under-
writer certificate in "1 984,
Marchant returned to WTSU
as head of the department of
finance, management,
marketing and general
business.
He chaired departments
under four deans until he
relinquished his position as
head of the Department of
Business Administration dur-
ing the fall semester of 1982 to
prepare a successor before
his retirement.
During his teaching career,
Marchant has developed
courses in industrial
psychology, management by
objectives, real estate
management and a number
of insurance courses. He also
raised more than $30,000 in
scholarship funds and has
written bids for the university
insurance carriers.
For many years, he
organized the annual
Homecoming barbecue, from
helping to cook hundreds of
pounds of beef to cleaning
afterward
The School of Business at
West Texas State University
currently has 2.246 majors
Zeke was in the business
department when it was in its
infancy and he is as responsi-
ble as any faculty member
for the growth and develop-
ment of our school.*’ wrote

Los Angeles, lived in Japan
for one year and in Houston
before he moved to Boys
Ranch at the age of 12. Two
brothers, who are ordained
ministers in Amarillo and
Dallas, also attended Boys
Ranch schools.
A bout with polio for three
years delayed his graduation
from Boys Ranch High School
until he was 19.
While attending Clarendon
College. Sarpalius met and
married Donna Ritchie. They
attended Texas Tech Univer-
sity where he earned a
bachelor's degree in
agricultural education He
earned a Master of
Agriculture degree from
WTSU in 1978.
As a college student at
WTSU and Clarendon. Sar-
palms worked as a church
custodian, milked cows at the
WTSU farm and drove a
school bus to earn money.
Following graduation from
Tech, he returned to Boys
Ranch as a staff member and
vocational agricultural
teacher for five years. He left
to become district office
manager of Billy Clayton,
who was then speaker of the
Texas House of Represen-
tatives. In 1979. he joined the
staff of Center Plains In-
dustries of Amarillo, where
he is director of business
development
Sarpalius and his wife are
the parents of one son, David.

Marchant will retire follow-
ing the 1983 summer session
after 33 years at WTSU Mar-
chant. the youngest of nine
children who grew up on
Texas and Oklahoma farms,
graduated from Pampa High
School and enrolled at WTSU
in 1938
He worked as the manager
of a supermarket at Tucum-
cari. N M . and marketing
manager for Panhandle Fruit
Company before he com-
pleted a business degree at
WTSU He earned a master's
