It would be better to leave the
study of love in the hands of the
poets, who have been struggling
with the subject for years.
Love is tender, sad, great, painful,
lonely, marvelous, real, lost, found
again and too much to bear.
If the government got any more
information than that for its

surprised.
though very little is said. Sometimes
just heavy breathing.)
Love is more broad-minded at the
kindergarten level. All the girls in
the class can love one boy and be
very happy about it.
Love is a costly experience if it
happens to a boy. Costly to the
father. (At least 35 more a week.)
In fact, poets have been dying for
love for centuries. It is a scientific
fact that poets live shorter lives than
anybody.
(I gave up poetry when I read that,

Well, the list just goes on and on,
and all of it has been compiled by the
poets of the world. And I suggest
that if science intends to use any of
this background in its studies, the
price for poetry ought to go up.

Spring is here and whatever
happened to Harvard University’s
research on love? The university got
a 3121,600 grant for the research
several years ago.
However, I can't recall hearing
that they turned up anything new.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, boys
and girls, and members of the
board, I have been researching that
tender subject off and on for most of
my life.
For 1121,600 I could have spent
even more research on it. A check
like that would buy a lot of
candlelight and chilled wine.
Anyway, don’t count much on
scientists fooling around with love.

WORM TURNS FOR EARLY BIRD
It is said that the early bird gets the worm. It is also said that worms
turn. And that is just what happened to one former Carthage gal who
has moved to the big city.
Johna Jimerson was one of 90 people selected from a field of 150 to go
to work for Texas International Airlines in Houston. She works in the
booking end of air travel and part of her new job involves at least a
limited use of computers-a field that is somewhat foreign to her.
The first few weeks on her new job will be spent in training and work
schedules revolve around the less hectic times of passenger service.
She is presently on the 4 a.m. to noon shift.
Being a consciencious person who wants to do the best possible job,
Johna decided to go in a little early so she could get some extra time on
the computer. That girl is bound to go far, but she really got a worm on
that first early bird try.
For some reason, TI had not issued employe identification cards to
the new employes. When Johna tried to gain entrance, a guard took her
into custody. She tried to explain that she worked there, but he was
skeptical despite her cherub face.
Making matters worse was the fact that several other employes
didn’t recognise her and could not, when asked to vouch for her, say
that she was indeed a TI employe. I’m sure Johna could see herself
being wished away to some dark dungeon reserved specifically for

fantastic! City crews had to work Saturdays and even Sundays to keep
up with the demand for trash removal service.
I suggested to Bob Mihlhauser, who heads that department for the
city, that the drive be extended a couple more weeks and he nearly
fainted. To emphasize his point that local folks had taken full
advantage of the free pick-up service offered during the clean-up
month. Bob showed me a four-inch stack of pick-up requests that
represented only about 10 days of calls.
But workmen didn’t always wait for calls. If they were in a
neighborhood and saw a pile of trash, they stopped and picked it up.
Suzy began to worry that someone was watching our house because
she had placed a couple of bags of trash out front and they were
collected in a matter of minutes-without the need of phoning City Hall.
The service provided by the city should be greatly appreciated by
everyone. I’m sure a phone call of thanks or a card expressing that
appreciation would be greatly welcomed at City Hall where most of the
communications from citizens come in the form of complaints.
FROM the MOUTHS of BABES
Nephew Andy, the youngster who used togotalotofinkinthis
column, was here Wednesday and was back to his old trick of saying
things that amaze people. Since it was raining outside, everyone
decided I should show the collection of colored slides I’ve amassed
I used to develop my own slides and still have some shots from the
first roll I developed. Because the process was new to me, I had gone to
the beach In Rhode Island (while serving in the Navy) and just took a
roll of random shots
One of those pictures shows a young man strolling down the board
walk with a girl under each arm. I guess Andy’s reaching the age
where he’s beginning to notice girls because Linda, his mother, made
sure he noticed that slide with the comment that "that guy’s got one
under each arm."
Q: I don’t understand where or
why you have to probate a will My
wife and I have papers giving rack
other the power of attorney Isn’t
this good enough? Couldn’t the living
person do anything they want to with
anything we have? Why should that
person have to pay out any momey?
What happens if we don’t have any
wills?
A: A power of attorney does not
survive the death of the person who
gave the power under Texas law if a
person dies withoui a will, title to his
property passes to his legal heirs
according to the laws of intestacy of
the state of Texas
In the event you die leaving a will,
the will can be probated after your
death in many cases, probating the
will is the best way to insure that
clear title to the property is given to
the beneficiaries named in your will
Q: I have, besides a life insurance
policy, vested monies in a profit-
sharing plan where I work My wife
is named as beneficiary on both In
the event of my death would she
have to pay taxes on the money she
received?
A: With respect to the life in-
surance, generally the money
received by your wife would not be
subject to federal income taxation
pursuant to Section 101 of the In-
ternal Revenue Code of 1954, as
amended Assuming that the profit
sharing plan is a "qualified” plan
under the Internal Revenue Code,
and that you have not been taxed on
any amounts contributed to the plan
by your employer, the amounts
received from the plan would be
subject to federal income tax, with
the amount of tax depending on
specific facts associated with your
income, the plan, and the manner of
payments from the plan to you.

As any poet who has researched
the matter knows, love was invented

writing, but trust me.)
Since then, poets have discovered
a tremendous amount about love.

Now known as the European Community, this
association of Western European states has grown
stronger over the years It stands today as a living
tribute to Monnet and that generation of European
leaders he inspired
Although the European Community’s ties are, as yet,
more economical than political, Monnet saw in a united
Western Europe with strong links to North America a
potent force for international peace and stability. He
once declared "When the partnership of America and a
United Europe mate it plain to all that the west may
change from within but that others cannot change it by
outside pressures, the conditions will exist for a lasting
settlement between the Soviet Union and the West.”
A realist as well as a dreamer, Monnet would be the
first to admit that the Atlantic alliance has yet to muster
the fiill measure of cohesion and political will essential to
nullify the Soviet threat. Still, it has kept Western Europe
free and prosperous for more than 30 years. For
contributing to this historic achievement, Jean Monnet
deserves the undying gratitude of the entire Free World.

Which was worse — what the senators did or the way
they did it? With only a few minutes of discussion, and
without a roll call vote which would have put each of
them on the record, members of the U.S. Senate has
quietly revised their ethics code so they could earn an
extra 316,375 in outside income every year.
The ceiling had been lowered from $25,000 to 38,625 two
years ago to help justify raising the salaries of senators
by 312,500 a year — to the present $57,500. All the pious
debate about ethics we heard in 1977 went out the window
in 1873
It seems a senator just can’t get by on 367,500 - or so
we are told by a straight-faced Sen Ted Stevens, the
Alaska Republican who argued the case for lifting the
ceiling Why, without the chance of picking up an extra
325,000 on the banquet circuit, he says, senators might
have to borrow money to pay their rent — or even send
their wives out to work.
Now we know why members of Congress can never
figure out how to balance the federal budget They can't
even balance their own.
How to slim down. Invest.
Buy a car. Grow tomatoes.
Save energy. Keep records.
Relieve the common cold.
Can food. Remove a stain.
No matter what kinds of questions you have,
there’s a good chance the Consumer Information
Catalog can help you find the answers
Inside, it lists more than two hundred federal

TORNADO SCARE COUNTS AS DISASTER DRILL
The weather has certainly dominated our lives in Panola County for
the past few weeks. Somebody got something a little mixed up this
year-wove had April Showers in March and are getting March Winds
In April
Luckily the winds didn’t get as bad as they could have last
Wednesday. But, tat the threat of tornadoes caused a lot of activity. I
board that the staff at Panola General Hospital moved all patients into
the hallways as a precaution and they’re going to count that as their
disaster drill for this period
Mao Nichols, who ramrods the drills, had planned to have an
indstrial accident drill at Valmac on Friday 13, but cancelled those
plans
