don’t want to be left out in the cold (or heat, or
whatever the weatherman brings).
Participants from both sides of the many
booths told us they had as much fun last year as
we did, so I know you won’t be disappointed by
planning now to enter a booth and compete for
one of several prizes—or just wander around the
fair grounds at Rountree School and see what
the many booths feature.
and pain and misfortune, and to create on the
earth a kind of idyllic utopia. And to expect God
to be this kind of a God is finally to be disap-
pointed and unsatisfied and unfulfilled.
No, the God who enters the world in the Christ
is a lowly God and a suffering God and a God
who takes upon himself all of the misfortunes
that we feel. And as such, God is the one who
walks through the valley of the shadow of death
at our side.
It is not important, finally, that we never ex-
perience hardship and adversity and misfortune
along the way. But what is important, finally, is
that we make our life journey in some kind of
communion and that we not live our days all
alone.
As a woman once said to her pastor, as she
clasped his hand near death, “Thank you for be-
ing here, thank you for being here. I'm not
afraid to die, but I don’t want to do it all alone.”
And neither do I and neither do you.
Our God was with Christ on the cross and in
the tomb and God fulfilled that suffering and
death. And our God is with us in suffering and
in death.
I STRONGLY recommend getting yourself
mentally prepared for this largest of regular
community events in Allen.
The fair is sponsored by the Allen Chamber of
Commerce, but it’s not strictly for the people of
Allen since thousands came from far and wide to
enjoy last year's fair which was successful
beyond expectations.

...Or at least it gives you a chance at being
perfect, if there is such a thing.
It might be smart to keep this in mind when
thinking that Allen’s second annual Country
Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10.
That may seem like a long ways off, but really,
it’s not, especially if you plan to participate in
this year’s event.

THE COUNTRY FAIR was a larger success

usual, for to hang a young boy in front of
thousands of spectators was no light matter.
“The three victims mounted together onto the
chairs, the three necks placed in the nooses.
‘Long live liberty’ cried the two adults. But the
boy was silent. Someone behind me asked,
‘Where is God? Where is he?’
At the signal from the head of the camp, the
three chairs were tipped over. Total silence
throughout the camp. On the horizon, the sun
was setting. We were weeping.
“Then the march past the gallows began. The
two adults were dead, the third rope was still
moving. Being so light, the child was still alive.
For more than half an hour he stayed there,
struggling between life and death, and we had to
look at him full in the face.”

Dear Editor:
I wish that I could call back all of the people
I’ve talked with on the telephone in the last
three months and thank them personally for all
their dedication and hard work in making the
Lucas-Fairview Carnival a huge success.
Instead, I’m writing this letter to all the
Lucas and Fairview residents as well as our
many helping friends from Allen, McKinney,
Parker, Wylie, Anna, Bishop, Plano, Richardson
and Garland.
So many of you spent long hours making and
baking things for the country store. The
business people in our community and beyond
were very generous as well. We appreciate all
the efforts of all of you to keep us the winners in
our fight against the sewage treatment plant.
Special thanks to all of you who worked sell-
ing tickets and volunteered your services to the
country store. Thanks to Alice, Melanie, Carole,
Dixie, Vesta, Paula, Linda and Bernie and boys,
Margaret, LaRue, Jim, Victoria and Nicholas.
Many heartfelt thanks,

Dear Editor:
On March 30, 1983, we received a letter from
the Allen Police Department. The letter stated
we were in violation of a city ordinance concern-
ing junk vehicles. We were told to dispose of the
car within 10 days or the city would remove it
and the car would be processed as scrap or
salvage.
Upon talking to the patrolman who issued the
letter, I was told he was making a neighborhood
check. Our car was classified as junk because it
had one flat tire and an expired license tag.
My question is: why weren’t other letters sent
in the neighborhood as there were three other
violations within a five-house area?
Maintaining property values and
neighborhood desirability is necessary. From
my recent observations in the city, Allen could
use a patrolman full-time on similar or worse
situations.
If we were in error, we deserved the letter.
However, does this city ordinance only apply to
some citizens and not City Council members?
I hope the patrolman will complete his
neighborhood check and mail out the other let-
ters, as we want Allen to continue to be a
desirable place to live.
