“REED ELEMENTARY and Reed Park are perfect tributes to
someone who has worked so closely with young people throughout
his life,” said Mark Thornton, director of the Allen Parks and
Recreation Department.
Before falling victim to multiple sclerosis in 1971, Reed served
actively in the Royal Ambassador missionary program at First
Baptist Church in Allen. He recalls those years as ones filled with
camp-outs and a “lot of fun working with young people.
“I have always enjoyed the outdoors and used to take the RA’s
on camp-outs all the time.”
He served as Collin County RA Association director for five
years during the 1950s and 1960s.

AMONG THOSE WHO addressed Saturday’s gathering and
presented Reed with an honorary plaque were Allen' Mayor Mickey
Pierson, who spoke on the importance of parks to the city, and Mc-
Carty, city manager, who outlined the funding and construction of
the park.
Ron Workman, chairman of the parks and recreation board,
discussed the board’s role in planning the park.
Dr. E.T. Boon, president of the Allen school board, spoke on the
relationship of the city and school district in the completion of the
park and elementary school.

Gene Reed opened his segment of Saturday’s on-site Reed Park
dedication ceremonies with “thank you” and then cited a passage
from the Bible.
When I think of nature I am always reminded of this scripture,
‘And Jesus increased in stature and wisdom and in favor with God
and man.’
“Like the scripture says, we need to grow in four ways, physical-
ly, intellectually, spiritually and socially. I think this park will help
us to do so.”
Ceremonies dedicating the adjacent elementary school were held
in April 1981.

IT WAS REALLY AN HONOR when Jon McCarty let me
know that the city had decided in a joint school board/city council
meeting to name the park and school after me,” said Reed.
“At first I thought someone was pulling my leg.”
Aside from his work with RA’s, Reed taught school in the Tioga
Independent School District from January 1946 to May 1947 and
in the Golden Rule Independent School District from September
1947 to May 1949.
He has also taught Sunday school—and continues to do so—for
30 years at First Baptist.
“The youths are our future and hope,” Reed said.
