"I was a scared little boy," wrote
Milton Gumer of the time he crawl-
ed out of the safety of his fox-hole
to save three men
Before receiving this letter, his
mother, Mrs Eva O Garner. 913
Bell, had received word that her
son, Tech. Third Grade Milton P
Garner, had been awarded the
Bronze Star medal for “heroism in
action against the enemy near the
Philippine Islands on April IB”
Garner, with a medical detach-
ment of the 123rd Infantry Regi-
ment of the 33rd Division, left the
safety of his fox-hole to aid wound-
ed men when an intenee enemy-ar-
tillery barrage fell on his battalion
bivouac area, causing many casual-
ties. He located three of the men
in exposed positions and dragged
them to silt trenches where he ad-
ministered first aid despite the fall-
ing enemy artillery shells, stated the
letter to Mrs. Garner from Head-
quarters of the 33rd Division

of arner saved the life of one man
and minimized the shock of the
other two, the letter said
in writing home of the experi-
ence. Garner told his mother, “I
was a scared little boy," and “my
feelings were very far removed
from heroism and courage; it’s just
that here was an obvious job to do
there in front of me at the time
and I tried to help do it."
Garner also wears the - Combat
Medics budge, Good Conduct rib-
bon, Combat Infantryman badge
and Philippine Liberation award.

Smithville High School until he en-
tered the Anny in October of that
year. He did six months work in a
civilian hospital in Washington, and
also served at Fort Lewis, Wash.,
and the Desert Training Center in
California.
When he first went overseas in
July, 1943, his first base was Ha-
waii, where he met his brother,
Ethan, Whom he had not seen in
nearly five years. Ethan was then
with the department of U 8. En-
gineers.
Garner was in New Guinea from
October, 1943, to February, 1945.
