Although the B-29 bombing group
which dropped the first deadly
atomic bomb on Hiroshima was un-
der his headquarters' command at
Guam, Major James Taylor, form-
erly associate professor of history
at Texas State College for Women,
admitted this week that the wea-
pon wfas as big a surprise to serv-
icemen in the Pacific as to the ci-
vilians back home.
"The best kept secret in the
world," the historian commented
during a visit to the campus after
his return from 20 months overseas
in the Pacific war theaters . "I
knew a little bit about everything
but that ”
Major Taylor has been chief of
the historical section of the U. S.
Anny Strategic Air Forces in the
I Pacific, with headquarters on Guam
under the command of General
Spaatz. He is now en route to
Washington to sujiervl.se the writ-
ing of the history of the U S. Ar-
my Air Forces in the Pacific from
I Dec 7, 1941. until the Japanese
surrender was signed aboard the
| USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay Sept,
j 2, 1945.
About three weeks ago, Major
| Taylor flew to Okinawa to confer
with the historian of the Elahth Ait-
