AP Women's Editor
Just staying home all day doesn’t
automatically make a woman a
good mother, says Helen Grayco,
wife of the professionally zany
Spike Jones and mother of Spike
Jr., 5, and Leslie Ann, 3.
Helen, a decorative and delicate
type, accompanies her orchestra-
leader husband on all his stpen-
uous one night-stand tours, does
her part in his TV shows, runs
a large home in Beverly Hills,
cooks the Italian dishes Spike
luves, designs her own wardrobe
and is a highly successful mother.
In her spare time, say between
She needs good common sense, |
a generous dash of ambition and ।
the ability to understand her hus-
band.
There are two kinds of wives
that automatically put the jinx on
any man applying for a franchise
from Weiss’ company. Says he:
“The woman who is obviously
bossy, and who answers every
question before her husband has a
chance to open his mouth, is poi-
if you've been bitten by the home
modernization bug, don't stop after
brightening the living room.
Go a few steps further and
streamline the laundry. It pays.
In too many millions of homes
the laundry consists mainly of an
automatic washing machine. True,
some housewives hsve taken the
back-break out of washday by lin-
ing up a gas clothes dryer next
to the washer.
But it is believed that the proper
layout of the laundry—even in a
minimum spa e—has a great deal
to do with getting the most out
of modern equipment.
So when looking over the space
at hand for remodeling purposes,
it is best to bear in mind that the
ideal home laundry should be di-
vided into four work centers.
1. Preparation center: Basic
equipment here should include a
sorting table, mending basket,
soaking sink and bleaches.
2. Washing center: Be sure that
this is near a source of plenty of
hot water. Wash tubs, washing ma-
chine, soaps, bluing and starch are
essential.
3. Drying centers: The auto-
matic gas clothes dryer eliminates
the need for outdoor and indoor
drying space, damp-dries clothes
in 15 minutes and takes only a half
hour to fluff-dry towels.

The woman who makes a pro-

Blazers and shirts are in for an-
other big season. Shirts have more
soft individual detail, some of
them lifted directly from men’s
fashions like the button-on evening
tie. Blazers continue as top-notch
for campus and sports activities.
Tweeds A 6MusC
For College Girl
The tweed suit or coordinated
separates promise to be the outfit
that every college girl will buy
this fall. Tweeds offer these new
features: soft styling that goes
with their newly softened texture,
and wonderful colors. •
Whether very young in silhouette,
with short fitted jacket and the
flared, petticoated skirt, or with
the slouchy new elegance of slim
lines and loose jacket, the tweed
suit satisfies the pocketbooks of
the young college girls.

2 and 4 a.m. some mornings, Mrs.
Jones plans the menu for the next
family reunion, at which her 10
brothers and sisters and their as-
sorted offspring gather with their
parents at the hospitable Jones
homestead. Says Helen:
‘ "We usually have these family
i eunions at our house on Christmas
and the Fuurth of July. There are
55 in the immediate family, count-
ing 26 grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren. My parents stay
with us, and all my brothers and
sisters and their families live
nearby," *'
Helen and Spike take Spike Jr.
and Leslie Ann along on all their
hips except the one-night stands.
Then when they are doing a Holly-
wood TV show, they sometimes
stay at home in Beverly Hills for
a couple uf months, spending all
rossible time with the small fry.
“I guess we spend more time
and thought on the children than
if I had nothing to do but stay
home and take care of them,” says "
Helen. “At any rate, I’m sure
they’re perfectly happy and well
adjusted, and I'm sure they haven’t
missed any love or companionship
from us.”
Helen sings with Spike's band,
laughs at his antics and acts as
best pal and severest critic when-
ever he tries out another of his
zany inventions on her.

passed, says Weiss who explains
his theory thus:
“Behind every successful man
there is a woman who under-
stands at just what point a man
needs to be pushed and when he
wants to be coddled. She should
encourage him when he’s down in
the dumps and tighten the rein
when he shows signs of wandering
into aimless pursuits.
“She must be happy and inter-
ested in her husband’s career, re-
alizing that it’s her career too,
and that she can make or break
it.
“She must be a good mixer,
willing and able to meet and en-
tertain her husband’s business as-
sociates, to nake friends with
them and to nake them believe
that friend husband is a rootin'-
tootin’ go-getter, even if he’s
merely a milk toast.
“A successful wife should keep
her own appearance up to snuff,
so that her husband will be prd
of her and his associates will be
impressed.
“She should be able to influence
her husband. That doesn’t mean
she has to henpeck him. It should
be done more subtly than that.
“Any wife who wants to see her
husband succeed should remem-
ber that she entered a partner-
ship with him when they got mar-
cess in business should pick the
right wife, says Juseph Weiss, a
businessman with an unusual phi-
losophy.
“Most men don’t realize how im-
portant their wives are in shaping
their financial future,” says
Weiss, president of an auto seat
c o v er manufacturing company
with retail outlets all over the
country. “I won't hire a represen-

atmosphere, Miss Vickie Lea Marts
was honored on her seventh birth-

Vickie Lee, the daughter of Mr.

with her parents near Caracas,

June when she came to Denton

Mr. Marta works for an oil com-

The party honoree was born in
San Antonio and when she was
five years old moved to South
America where she attended a
private company school and took
dancing lessons.
The party scene was gaily dec-
orated with red and white crepe
paper streamers and a long bright-

and birthday cake. The point of

Moscow Dislikes
Dior Styles, Too
MOSCOW w — Moscow’s sen-
timents are that the West can keep
Christian Dior’s new flat-bosomed
styles.
TheyYe not regarded as either
practical or esthetic in the U.S.S.R.
A chesty Russian maiden—there
are many such here—when asked
what she thought of Dior’s boyish
lines sniffed:
"I think Dior better fit men with
flatheads. With ideas like that he’s
his own best flathead model."
She said styles which take the
curves off women will never catch
on in Russia. She’s in agreement
with Russian dress designers who
say Russian women like best what
they get here—everything loose
and well-filled.
