I-r-tda Eezc: Feced with the shortage of infants available for adoption, childless

.....I LOVE YOU
I love you because your hair is
gray, or brown as the leaves of
” winter.
I love you because your eyes are
tired or rimmed with tears.
I love you because you wear a
shabby coat with a button missing,
because your shoes are worn and
seamed with the wearing.
I love you because you are so con-
scious of the marks of adolescence
on your skin, because your teeth
are crooked and one of them is miss-
ing from your smile.
I love you because there is sadness
in the turn of your lips, because your ’
shoulders are stooped under the thin
dress, because your feet hurt and
the heels are calloused and sore
I love your hands, all lined and
gnarled like tree bark, the nails
black-edged and broken, the palms
rough with the years’ abrasion.
I love your body thickened by
child-bearing or by the long hours
bent over the machine or the plow.
I love your chapped throat and the
stubble of beard.
I love you because you are ugly
and afraid, because you are tortured
and lonely, because you are envious
and proud, because you are hated
and hating.
I love you because we are all alike,
though we differ in our pain and
pleasure, in our eyes and smile, in
our covering and our bodies. Be-
cause we are all, of us reflections of
each other.
Because within us there is the
same unspoken prayer: “Love me.”
