KKTHERE ARE THE most colorful 20
VV miles in the world? You could get a lot
of argument on this question, of course, but
not from the millions who have seen south-
western Utah. Their choice would be the
Rim Road in Bryce Canyon National Park.
From this road you can view one of nature’s
most fantastic works: 14 enormous amphi-
theaters crowded with a myriad of rock for-
mations in every color of the spectrum.
It took nature 50 million years to carve
Bryce Canyon, and the work is still not done.
More than anything, perhaps, the canyon
looks like the workshop of giant sculptors
who left a masterpiece unfinished.
Bryce Canyon covers 55 square miles and

more than 36,000 acres. The entire area, plus
some 30 miles of the beautiful Pink Cliffs,
can be seen from Rainbow Point, at the
southern end of the park. The predominant
rock formations in the huge amphitheaters
are domes, spires, minarets, and temples,
but you can also pick out gargoyles, castles,
dragons, and human shapes. The predomi-
nant colors are red, pink, and cream, but 60
different tints have been recognized. And the
hues and shapes change and shift throughout
the day as the sun crosses the sky.
The area’s first permanent settler was
cattleman Ebenezer Bryce. Asked to describe
the canyon bearing his name, Bryce replied,
“Well, it's a hell of a- place to lose a cow.”
