I always thought his breath smelt

Effects of Whiskey.
At the recent meeting of the
Alpha Omega Alpha Society of
the University of Pennsylvania,
Prof GrahatLusk, of Cornell
Universityr<h• li vered a notable
address, summarizing the con-
clusions of eminent scientists
concerning the effects of alcohol
on mental and muscular labor,
in part he said:
"For the first few minutes
after taking alcohol, it has been
found that a larger quantity of
physical work may be per-
formed. This is followed, how-
ever, by a period of depression
during which the quantity of
mechanical energy which may
bcexpended by the individual is
greatly reduced. The sum total
of the effect is very decidedly to .
reduce the amount of mechanical
work which can be accomplished
during the day. It is on this ac-
count that alcohol is no longer
given to soldiers on the march
in the hope of increasing the’r
endurance. The actual result
would be quite the contrary.”

Liquor is Baneful.
In the correspondence column
of the Willimson County Sun a
writer under {the name .of Jan?
Thaw reports the disgusting
news which is the offspring of
the liquor traffic; she says:
They say it takes liquor to
make a town lively, and that fact
was thoroughly demonstrated
here last Saturday afternoon and
night. The sons of Belial were
here from different parts of the
country—and of several colors—
and fighting was common. I
will mention one very shameful
thing in particular: One of the
drunken Belial boys came along
the road, called out Mr. Will
Craft as if to see him on some
business and, catching him off
his guard, knocked him down and
while in a semiconscious state
stamped him and beat him up
terribly. Mrs. Craft came to
the assistance of her husband
with a gun, but the brute caught
the gun, and, in trying to wrench
it from the hand of Mrs. Craft,
dragged her over the yard,
lacerating her hand considerably.
Several arrests were made Satur-
day during the day and night.
A man was loaded up from the
streets and hauled home to his
wife beastly drunk. If liquor is
a good thing, the good part of it
fails to appear above the surface
in Jarrell. ___-
The Townsite Company of
Jarrell seems to have caught th-
idea that the saloon is not a draw-
ing card, ns they make no men
tion of the saloon along with other
interests in the display nd which
