The government estimates that
good roads enhance the selling
value of land from two to nine
dollars an acre The govern-
ment also has figures to show
that in almost every case where
there are good roads the popula-
tion has increased. The sections
of country which have lost in
population ’are conspicuous for
impassable roads. Here is an
example: In twenty-five coun-
ties, selected at random, in
which an average of only one
and a half per cent of the roads
were improved, the population in
ten years DECREASED over
3,000 in each county. In another
twenty five counties, selected at
random, but in which there was
an average of forty per cent of
improved roads, the population
INCREASED over 31,000 in each
county. These are facts col-
lected by our national govern-
ment, and they form one of the
unanswerable arguments why
Upshur county should vote for
good roads on the 18th.

very well performed. It was
difficult for the reason there was
so much of the play in his party.
He sustained, it admirably how-
ever.
The part of Edward Ramsey,
head of the rich society family of
Philadelphia, was taken by Mr.
Orville Mathews, and was ad-
mirably sustained. Mr. Ma
thews has had professional ex-
perience on the stage, and is a
natural actor. As the "drinking
digraceful but always cheerful
head of the society family” he
was a decided success.
Mrs. Kittie Banker as Mrs.
Edward Ramsey, was at one
time on the professional stage
and is a splendid actress, and as
Mrs. Rarrsey, interested in the
marrying off of her daughter,
and disgusted with her drunken
husband, she played her part
without a break, with ease and
naturalness.
Miss Mildred McClelland, as
Miss Nellie Ramsey, the society
daughter, in love with the great
lawyer, and jealous of “Nan,”
the thief, her love and pride be-
ing constantly at war, showed
splendid dramatic talent, and ad
mirably sustained the part.
Mr. Reese Epperson as ‘Tom
Dorgan,” the thief, the tutor of
Nan, as her pal, was real good,
though he essayed the part that
never elicits sympathy from the
audience, but to critical observ-
ers it would have been hard to
have found some one to present
the character better.
Mr. Jim Taylor took the part
of. Bishop Van Wagner,” and
his presentation of the character
was all that could be desired.
In the minor parts, Mr Joe
Taylor as the theatrical mana-
ger, "Frederick Obermuller,"
Mr. Leo Eberhart as “Burnet
and Officer Burke,” Mrs. May
Croley as “Mag Monohan, ser-
vant to Nance Olden, Mr Albert
Tucker, as Harry Van Ness,
the police newspsj er .reporter,
and Mr. John A. Mathis, as

house, with chairs in the isles, in
front and rear of the theatre.
The play is a strong one, and a
pretty story, dealing with the
underworld as well as the so-
ciety set. It is a story of hu-
man interest from start to finish,
with a very pretty love story of
the love of a great lawyer for an
"alley rat” pickpocket known as
"Nan the Nipper,” and his ef-
forts to turn her from her evil
ways into paths of uprightness,
and his final success and tri
umph in winning her love, de -
voted as she was to her thieving
convict pal.
