SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Jine 9.-BY
a shoestring one-handed catch right
back of short field, Ike Boone saved
the game for San Antonio in the ninth
inning of a fast, well played contest
Saturday. The Bears were leading in
tle ninth 2 to 1 with Sand Crabs on
bas and one out, when Wendell hit
a Texas leaguer just back of short and
Boone came loping in after it. The
play looked impossible but Ike got It
with one hand and doubled Kearns
off second. Both Morrison and Gra-
ham pitched tight ball. Score;

The University of Texas track team of 1923 pictured here was undoubtedly the greatest collection of track
and field stars ever gathered together under the'colors of any Southwestern Conference school. Coach Clyde
0 ; Littlefield’s men captured the conference title with great ease, scoring more than twice as many points as did
0, their nearest competitor. Every dual meet was captured with ease, and the Longhorn medley relay team upset
—-—jail the dope by winning over the Pennsylvania University relay team in the Kansas relay games. Four members
4 of thIs championship aggregation, Reese, half miler; McNatt, quarter 'miler; Thames, hurdler, and Trout, two
miler, will leave Monday for Chicago, where they will compete in the National Collegiate track meet.

CHICAGO, June 9.— Eddie Collins,
। veteran second baseman of the White
Sox. Is still king of the keystone
'guardians in the American League,
j Collins has so upset the dope that
those who pictured him an old man
are standing back in awe. According
to figures compiled today, which in-
clude games of last Wednesday, he has
stolen 19 bases, just one less than he
pilfered for the entire season last year.
By cracking out eleven hits in his
last six games Collins has boosted his
’ avergae from 349 to .370 and is press-
ing the leaders, who have participated
in thhjy or more games. He now is
fourth. Harry Hellmann of the Tigers
continues to top tne regulars with .426,
with “Muddy” Ruel of Washington the
runnerup with .382. Dick Reichle, the
former University of Illinois star with
the Red Sox, is trailing Ruel with .375.
Collins is also pressing Wamby of the
Indians for the honors in sacrifice hits.
Wamby is leading with 16, and Collins
has 14.
Babe Ruth, added one to his string
of homers, during the past week, and
now is out in front with twelve. He
also leads in total bases with 107 and
in runs scored with forty-two.

SHREVEPORT, La., June 9.—The
game today was a nine inning
burlesque with the Gassers and Um-
pires O’Hearn -nd Weir playing the
star roles. The comedy ended with
the score, 11 to 5, in favor of the
Spudders. A mob scene was enacted
in the seventh inning when Umpire
Weir chased Riley from tha game for
commenting on a decision at second
base. O’Hearn was in trouble through-
out with players o. both teams. Much
of the grandstand’s wrath was directed
at O'Hearn. Only the police and the
sheriff's deputies prevented the fans
from taking possession of the field In
the seventh inning, the mob surging
on the diamond, trying for the um-
pires’ scalps and time was called un-
til order was restored. Over a hun-
dred pt pie left the park in disgust
over the way the game was conducted.

Opening a home stay of six games,
the Austin Rangers will take on the
Corsicana Gumbo Busters, this after-
noon at Ranger Park, the 'game start-
ing at 3:30. Manager Grubbs' nine has
been playing a fast brand of ball for
the past week or so, taking three
straight from the Indians and giving
the league-leading Mexia Gushers all
the opposition they wanted. One big.
cause for the Gumbo Busters' spurt is
the hard hitting of Manager Harvey
Grubb, about the best fielding third
sacker in the association.
Either Manager Johnson or Bob
Crow will work for the Rangers today.
