People who believe that the
octopus is a sea animal found only
in story books will have a chance
to change their minds when they
gaze upon a baby octopus on dis-
play in a window at the Chamber
of Commerce.
The octopus was captured by
Lester Schwarz Friday morning
while he was helping fix up King
Neptune’s, barge at Deep Eddy for
the water pageant to be given
Labor Day by the Business and
Professional Woman’s Club. The
animal was alive when first
sighted and was killed by Schwarz
as he attempted to capture it. The
queer catch was placed in a bottle
and brought to The Austin States-
man office by Miss' Harriet Belger,
general chairman of the water
pageant celebration.
The octopus is believed to have
been in some shrimp bought by a
fisherman here for bait and to
have come with the shrimp from
one of the Texas gulf ports. It is
unusual to see such an animal in
this part of Texas, since the oc-
topua is strictly a salt water
animal. The octopus was found
on King Neptune’s Barge and only
his timely discovery by Miss Bolger
