The passing of Thanksgiving traditionally places a focus on the
Christmas season and -- for many people -- the next few weeks will become
a time of hurried preparation for the holiday season to come.
But this year there is a new factor to consider.
Patriotism, along with the Christmas preparatory season, is in the air.
And that is as it should be...this year and every year. For many of the
religious freedoms we enjoy in this country are a result of the patriotic
efforts of Americans who went before us. And those freedoms are still being
defended in a variety of ways by a number of Americans today.
It is a shame that a situation in Iran is serving as a catalyst that now is
bringing us together as a people.
Patriotism should not need a ‘situation’ in order to be practiced.
In Mercedes today there are many people who are now more aware of
their rights and benefits -- and responsibilities -- as Americans because of
the sacrifices being made daily by 49 of their countrymen being held captive
by forces of darkness in Iran.
Up and down the streets of this community, American flags are now on
display as a reminder of those sacrifices. Last week the Enterprise printed a
picture of flags on display on Texas Avenue. We are running another
picture of an American flag on display in Mercedes at the top of this
editorial. In the weeks to come -- as long as there are any Americans being
held captive in Iran -- we will continue to have front page pictures of
American flags being displayed in Mercedes.
Future pictures will be shown without any further comment.
None should be required. The Red, White and Blue should speak for
itself.

order to develop quickness and agility
and to maintain gains made earlier in
the program.
April and May coaches will put their

training as well as running and speed
work.
“We hope the results,” says Loomis,
speaking of the program, “will be

Although the 1980 football season is
more than nine months away, more than
90 MHS athletes are beginning a
training program designed to build them
up physically in order to become more
competitive in next year’s title race.
The goal of the program is, says
Mercedes Coach Bob Loomis, “to put 20
pounds of weight on each participant,
add two inches to each muscle group of
every athlete, and to have each person
be able to bench-press his own
weight...plus an additional 50 pounds.”
“It’s simple,” says Loomis. “If we
don’t make the effort now, the people we

‘Friends' to
be organized
The staff of Mercedes Memorial
Library is planning a special program on
Friday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the
library auditorium to promote the
formation of a “Friends of the Library”
organization.
Traditionally, “Friends” support a
library in a variety of ways, including
volunteer help, assistance with fund-
raising events, including such things as
used book sales, organizing and aiding
personnel with special exhibits, library
tours and numerous other activities.
Ms. Lindy Williams, of the library
staff, says, that Mercedes is badly in
need of a “Friends” group. .“We want
people who care about the library,” she
says. “In California with the passage of
Proposition 13, they have had to close
some libraries. It is important that we
get started now to provide our library
with support from those who are
concerned about its importance.”
Some of the needs of the library
include a carpet for the auditorium,
pictures, a platform and new furniture.
The special meeting December 7 will
feature Mrs. Helen Mac P. Thompson,
of Harlingen, who will speak on the
importance of the storyteller and keeping
alive an interest in books. The program
will also include a short talk by Mayor
Buddy Ross, an explanation of the
“Friends” program, and refreshments.
Ms. Williams urges all those who are
interested in the library and might wish
to help it in any way to come to the
meeting.

Players were selected by coaches
voting by secret ballot. Each coach was
allowed to nominate players from his
own squad, but could not vote for
players from his team.
Coach Loomis said he knew that
“good kids were left off” the teams
because there were so many quality
players in the district this year.
“It takes more than physical talent to
be named All-District,” said the coach.
“You have not only to be the best at
your position, but also have character
and leadership abilities. Being named is
an honor.”
