around saloons and spend theie time
in playing billiards and gambling,
and then wonders why, in spite of
his best efforts, he sinks annually
and deeper into debt, till the sheriff
cleans him out, and he stars out
west to begin again.
The time has come for us to turn
over a new leaf. Our boys and girls
must be taught to love labor by qual-
ifying themselves, to do it efficiently.
We must turn out fewer profes-
sionals and more skilled artisans
and producers. We must grow
and fabricate the immense quantity
of articles that we now annually im-
port, and so reduce the foreign debt
that we have so long and so success-
fully augmented year by year. We
must qualify our clever boys to erect
and run factories, saw mills and ma-
chine shops; to open and work mines,
improve and fashion implements, and
double the products of the farm. If
we shall adopt this policy, and then
make such measures as will correct
the abuses growing out of our mam-
moth railway privileges, we shall
soon, without doubt, begin to witness
a true development of national pros-
perity that will be as firm as the ev-

Of the verdict we have nothing to

County, greeting:
Whereas, L. J. Latham has filed his peti-
tion in said District Court, complaining of
,L. S. Bearce and alleging in substance as fol-
lows : That on the 31st of July. 1st of Aug-
ust, 1th, 20th and 23d days of September,
andon the th day of October A. D., 1873, clothes the case might be otherwise,
petitioner doing business as a merchant in
the city of Houston, Harris county, Texas,
under the firm name and style of L. J. La-
tham. at the special instance and request of
said L. S. Bearce, bargained, sold and deliv-
ered to him certain goods, wares and mer-
chandise specified" in the account
attached to said petition, amounting
in the aggregate to the sum of $713 36
which- he, said- Bearee, then under-
took, agreed and promised to pay, in the city
of Houston, Harris county, Texas, said sev-
eral sums of money charged in said account,
and which are reasonably worth the amount
set opposite their name; that said sum is
still due and wholly unpaid, wherefore- he
brings this suit and prays judgment for said
sum of $713 35, with interest at eight per
cent per annum irom the first day of January;
1874, and the said L. S. Bearce being now a
resident of the State of New York.

Symptoms of a Diseased Liver?
DAIN in the right side, under the
JT edge of the ribs, increase on pres-
sure; sometimes the pain is in the
left side; the patient is rarely able
to lie on the left side; sometimes
the pain is felt under the shoulder-
blade, and it frequently extends to
the top of the shoulder, and is some-
times mistaken for a rheumatism in
the arm. The stomach is affected
with loss of appetite and sickness;
the bowels in general are costive,
sometimes alternative with lax ; the
head is troubled with pain, accom-
panied with a dull, heavy sensation
in the back part. 'I here is generally
a considerable loss of memory, ac-
companied with a painful sensation
of having left undone something
which ought to have been done. A
slight, dry cough is sometimes an at-
tendant. The patient complains of
weariness and debility; he is easily
startled, his feet are cold or burning,
and he complains of a prickly sensa-
tion of the skin ; his spirits are low ;
and although he is satisfied that exer-
cise would bo beneficial to him, yet
he can scarcely summon up fortitude
enough to try it. / In fact, he dis-
trusts every remedy. Several of the
above symptoms attend the disease,
but cr °s have occurred where few
of them existed, yet examination of
the body, after death, has shown the
liver to have been extensively de-
ranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. C. M’LANE’s Liver Pills, in
cases of Ague and Fever, when
taken with Quinine, are productive
of the most happy results. No better
cathartic can be used, preparatory to
or after taking Quinine. We would
advise all who are affiicted with this

cured by this preparation, are publicly known,
so remarkable as hardly to be believed, were
they not proven beyond dispute, \s a remedy,
it is adequate, on which the public inay rely
for full protection. By curing Coughs, the
forerunners of more serious dirense, it saves un-
numbered lives, and an amount of sneering hot
to be computed. It challenges trial, and con-
vinces the most sceptical. Every fumily should
keep it on hand as a protection against the early
and till perceived attack of Pulmonary Alec-
tion- which are easily met at first, but which
become incurable, and too often fatal, if neg-
lected. Tender lungs need this defence: and it
is unwi- • to be without it. As a safeguard to

The tollowing testimonial from residents of
Dallas county will speak for itself:
State of Texas, Dallas county :
We, the undersigned citizens and planters
of the State of Texas, have used and seen
used, withentire satisfaction, T. C. Garllng-
ton’s Cottpn Seed and Corn Planter, and do
recommend it to all farmers as the very best
machine we have ever seen. The regularity
with which it drops the seed, the narrow
space in which it is sown, and the way of
covering, guarantee a more certain stand of
cotton and leaves it easier to cultivate than
when otherwise planted. These advan-
tages, together with the amount of labor and
seed saved, render it oue of ihe most useful
and valuable inventions we have yet seen.
One great merit of this machine, is its cheap-
nesss anc practicability. We take pleasure
in in recommending it to the favorable cqn
sideration of all. *

MW No one remedy is louder
H MP called for by the necessities of

Baa W/ snre and safe cure fo Fever
m ) and Ague. Such we are now
"E- MD' enabled to offer, with a perfect
A certainty that it will eradicate
w the disease, and with assur-
ance, founded on proof, that no harm can arise
from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this dis-
order must be of immense service in the com-
munities where it prevails. Prevention is better
than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which
he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis.
temper. This “Cure” expels the miasmatie
poison of Fever and Ague from the system,
and prevents the development of the disease, if
taken on the first approach of its premonitory
symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever
yet discovered for this class of complaints, but
also the cheapest. The large quantity we sup-
ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of
everybody; and in bilious districts, where
Fever and AGUE prevails, everybody should
have it, and use it freely, both for cure’and pro-
tection. It is hoped this price will place it within
the reach of all—the poor as well as the rieh;
A great superiority of this remedy, over any
other ever discovered for the speedy'and certain
cureofIntermittents is, that it contains 1o Qui-
nine or mineral; consequently it produces no
quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon
the constitution.efhose cured by it are left 15
healthy as if they had never had the disease.
Fever and Ague is not alone the eonseqnence
of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis-
orders arise from its irritation, among which
are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache,
! Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh. Asth-
ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen,
Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis,
aud derangement of the Stomach, all of which,
when originating in this cause, put on the in-
termittent type, or become periodical. This
“Cure” expels the poison froin the blood, and
consequently cures them all alike. It is- an in-
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temjorarily residing in the mala-
rious districts iftaksen occasionally or daily
while expose • to the infectjon, thhrwil be ex-
creter from the ■ y! om, antonnnot acrnmulate
in suficient qu mnity to riven into disease
Hence it is oven moi <• valuable for piptoction
than cure: and few vill ■ from Inter-
mittents if they tvaik themselves of the protec-
tion thi- reuecy affords..
For Liri-r Ct>;>i;Pai>i.h- arimg irom torpid,

ulating the liver into heniter activty, and pro-
ttu ing moe truly temarkalle cures, where
