The bill that passed to engrossment
in the House of Representatives, pro-
viding for the organization oi Com-
missioner’s Courts, stipulates as fol-
lows: These courts shall be composed
of the County Judge and four com-
missioners, the Judge to preside and
hold his office for two years, with
like term for the commissioners.
These courts are empowered to divide
their counties into precincts, not less
than four nor more than eight, for the
election of justices and constables,
and to establish voting places; to
to establish ferries and roads; build
bridges, provide for working roads
and control the same; provide
county buildings; adjust county
accounts; provide for pupers, idiots
and such lunatics not admitted to the
State Asylum, and exercise other
powers hereafter prescribed.
The said court shall constitute a
“Board of Equalization” for deter-
mining the value of all taxable
property in the county, and classify-
ing the same, and shall exorcise ap-
pellate jurisdiction in questions of
assessment. Shall levy and collect
county taxes not to exceed one hall
of the State tax, except for the pay-
ment of existing debts and for the HOUSTON
erection or repair of public buildings.
An error occurred in yesterday’s
Age, relative, to the demise of Mrs-
Wharton. The deceased was the
relict of the late Confederate General
John Wharton, and not his mother,
Mrs. Sarah Wharton, who still sur-
vives.

to be provided with record
books for all proceedings oi said
courts and for those authorized to be
done by the clerks in vacation, these
latter to be read over and signed on
the first day of the next succeeding
court term. Three members to con-
stitute a quorum, and,in the absence
of the County Judge they may elect
one of their number to preside. Reg-
ular terms of said courts to be held
at the courthouses on the second
